Prep Your Classic Car Before Restoring It

Prep Your Classic Car Before Restoring It

by

It is no doubt a fact that to rebuild and restore any type of classic car engine will involve a great bit of your time. Even though, admittedly, it may provide you with great personal satisfaction. And if only to reduce the amount of hours that you spend on your project, it is worthwhile to do as much prep work before you begin to disassemble the car. Keep in mind, however, that specific engine removal procedures are not the same for all cars. And if you are in doubt don’t hesitate to pick up the service manual for your specific type of auto.

Engines from the classic cars of yesterday consist of many fewer components than even the simplest of today’s engines. Even so, this doesn’t diminish the importance of taking great care when disassembling a class auto engine. Before beginning, video tape or take pictures of the engine and all components connected to it from every angle. And document anything about the engine that is unusual.

Keep in mind that when you start the restoration project, you never know exactly how well the restoration project will develop. Inevitably, there will always be surprises. You may have the engine in pieces for day, weeks, or even months. It’s very easy to forget where certain components of the car came from. And there’s nothing more frustrating than having one or more parts left over when the re-assembling is complete.

It is important that you do not throw away any of the original parts that you have removed – until the refurbishing is finished. This is true even if you already have a replacement part for it. Save all of the parts in a box until the engine has been completely reassembled and is running perfectly. It helps for you to label the parts as you remove them. This way you avoid confusing similar looking components. You can use tags to label them or if the part is not an internal engine component, you can inscribe them with identifying marks or labels.

Personal safety is key. So, before you start, ensure that you have decent protection for your eyes. In addition, you will most likely discover that if you wear a good pair of mechanics gloves, it will help to save your knuckles. And, make sure that you check the engine before touching it to prevent burning yourself. Also, sometimes you may have to remove the car hood in order to get enough clearance to remove the larger parts of the engine.

As you take apart the car engine, be careful not to harm any of the engine components that you are working with. A tip for doing this is to start by taking out all accessories from the engine block. Begin with the exhaust and intake manifolds. Now you can begin the work of taking apart the engine block. The crucial point at this stage is to not force remove any part unless you absolutely have to. Anytime that you use brute force on any part of an engine, you take the chance of possibly doing more harm than good. So, if studs have rusted try using a rust penetrating lubricant before attempting more forceful means.

If the penetrating lubricant does not work, try a stud remover. Tap the head GENTLY but Again, don’t force them. It can’t be stressed enough that you should be as gentle with the stud as humanly possible. As a last resort, if the stud still cannot be removed, you may have to find someone familiar with arc welding techniques which can be used to remove studs.

As part of your tagging, number all of the piston tops, connecting rods, rod bearing caps, and other components that come in multiples. Tag other components such as the valve lifters, push rods, and valves as to their position.

If you properly do the auto disassembly prep work before beginning your engine restoration, you have just made your restoration job immensely easier.

Fresh Laundry – How to Have Fresh Smelling Laundry Every Time

by

Ella Schwartz

Pick up a freshly washed piece of garment from the pile of your laundry; hot out of the dryer, does it smell fresh and clean or does it have peculiar odors or has a distinct sour smell? Most of us have been through situations when it was simply impossible to get the odor out of clothes even after running them through two wash cycles. If your have been trying to wade your way through piles of laundry that does not smells less than fresh even when they are just out of the dryer, here are some simple tips that can be used to ensure that your clothes come out smelling fantastic each time.

The Basics

How fresh your laundry smells will depend on scores of factors such as how dirty the clothes were when you put them in the washing machine, the detergent used, the load of the machine and the type of water (hard or soft) etc. So, it is essential to follow manufacturer instructions for both the appliances as well as the washing products such as detergent and fabric softeners

If you want your laundry to smell good, you need to start with a clean washing machine. One of the easiest ways to ensure that your laundry appliances do not smell musty and dank is to not leave any clothes in them once you are done washing. If your washing machine still smells like something died in it, fill it up with hot water. Don’t throw in the clothes as yet and don’t switch the machine on. Just pour in 2 cups of distilled white vinegar in the machine and let the liquids stay put for about half an hour. This will take the musty odor out of the machine which gets easily transferred to freshly washed laundry. You may also want to try out one of the other deodorizing products specially designed for washing machines and dryers.

Turn on the machine now and let the water and vinegar concoction gush through every part of the washer, use the regular water cycle. Then, add the load of laundry with one capful of detergent and let the washing machine do its job. After the clothes have gone through one each cycle, pick one up and smell it to make sure that everything is good.

Put the clothes in the dryer as soon as you are done washing them and use a scented fabric softener sheet when drying your clothes.

Other tips to get fresh smelling laundry include using very hot water to wash clothes (whatever is permissible for a particular type of fabric) and drying your clothes on the line. The fresh air and the sun shine can get your clothes smelling really fresh.

How Do You Like Your Laundry To Smell?

There are two schools of thoughts when it comes to fresh smelling laundry; people who want their clothes to smell good and those who just want them to smell clean without any odors. If you fall in the later category, the vinegar and water mixture will prove very useful. You don’t always have to go through the entire machine cleaning procedure. Just add a cup of vinegar with the laundry load to the machine along with a non scented detergent and this should do the trick

Dealing With The Real Smelly Laundry Jobs

The above tips can work wonders for normal clothes but we all have had to deal our fair share of laundry nightmares from time to time; from cigar odors, to kitty pee and from the disgusting smell of mildew in the towels to the stench of sweat in the armpits of your clothes. Here is a look at two powerful substances that can help you to tackle the truly messy laundry jobs.

Cigar: Not everybody appreciates the smell of a Cuban; particularly, when it is emanating from your clothes. To get the smell of cigars and cigarettes out of your clothes, soak them in some warm water with a few drops of some dish soap such as Dawn for about 10 minutes. The next step is to put the clothes in the washing machine the Dawn laced water and all; give them a few swirls and soak again for 30 minutes. Run the normal wash cycle and the let the clothes get spin dried. Spray a product called ozium on the clothes while they are still wet and transfer them to the dryer or line-dry them.

Mildew: If your clothes smell of mildew, use good old Borax to get rid of the smell. Mix 2-3 tablespoons of Borax in the water, it will not only remove the musty odor but will also kill the fungus and bacteria in the clothes. However, do not use Borax if you are hand washing your clothes.

Pee: Oh yes, this is a tough one, baby pee or the real worst kind kitty pee. Most people would simply discard their clothing after a pet toilet training mishap; however, there is a way to get the foul smell of urine out of the clothes. Since the stench is strong, you will need to bring in the heavy artillery such as baking soda and vinegar.

Start by applying a paste of baking soda and water on the areas that have the urine stains, let the mixture sit on the fabric for a few minutes; do not rinse the mixture out yet. Add a cup of vinegar to some hot water and put the clothes through a normal wash cycle in the washing machine. These two steps are usually enough to remove baby pee odor but you may have to repeat in case of kitty pee.

You can also use the mixture of baking soda and water on the armpits of your shirts to get rid of sweat stains and odor. Mix some Borax with water to soak your socks to get rid of the smell and the bacteria in them.

These are some of the most effective ways to get great smelling laundry. The best part of using these natural products is that they do not leave harmful chemicals back the cloth fiber. Vinegar, Borax and Baking soda are easily available and incredibly cheap. So, the next time you have smelly laundry on your hands, you know what to do.

Mumbai sieges come to an end

Saturday, November 29, 2008

Police forces in India have ended the hostage sieges which followed the Mumbai attacks, which began on Wednesday in Mumbai, the financial capital of India.

It ended when commandos finally caught up with a lone gunman, who had played a cat-and-mouse game in the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, nearly 56 hours after the attacks began.

According to Indian television and radio, 155 people have been killed and 327 others wounded. Local media have described the attacks as “India’s 9/11.” CNN is reporting over 160 dead and 370 injured. Eleven gunmen killed are not counted in these totals.

Police say that they are in control of both the Taj Mahal and Oberoi Trident hotels. Nearly 300 people have been freed.

The siege of Nariman House, an outreach post of the orthodox-Jewish sect Chabad-Lubavitch, ended when at least eight Black Cats commandos entered the building by rope from a helicopter. No hostages or attackers survived the assault, though details are still unclear.

“These people were very, very familiar with the hotel layouts and it appears they had carried out a survey before,” said an unidentified commander of MARCOS, India’s elite marine commandos. The commandos were hampered because they feared injuring hotel guests if they used overwhelming force.

“Bodies were strewn all over the place, and there was blood everywhere,” he said.

The commander also noted that his unit found a backpack belonging to one of the gunmen. Inside they found dried fruit, 400 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, four grenades, Indian rupees and American dollars, and seven credit cards from some of the world’s leading banks and a national ID card for the island nation of Mauritius.

“Once the bodies are collected, the number of deaths might go up to 200,” said India’s Minister of Home Affairs Sri Prakash Jaiswal.

“We came up against highly motivated terrorists,” said Vice-Admiral J.S. Bedi, whose commandos led the assault against the militants.

India’s foreign minister, Pranab Mukherjee, said, “Preliminary evidence indicates that elements with links to Pakistan are involved,” stirring a diplomatic row between India and Pakistan. Observers have said that the attacks bear the hallmarks of Lashkar-e-Toiba or Jaish-e-Mohammed, both of which are believed to be based in Pakistan and also responsible for previous attacks on India.

However, Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousaf Raza Gillani said that Pakistan had “nothing to do with the attacks.”

“It is unfair to blame Pakistan or Pakistanis for these acts of terrorism even before an investigation is undertaken,” Husain Haqqani, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, said in a statement. “Instead of scoring political points at the expense of a neighboring country that is itself a victim of terrorism, it is time for India’s leaders to work together with Pakistan’s elected leaders in putting up a joint front against terrorism.”

Judge orders Baltimore City prison to produce plan for improvement

Saturday, July 2, 2005

A city Circuit Court judge in Baltimore, Maryland, John M. Glynn, ordered state corrections officials on Friday to produce in 30 days a written report that will outline plans to reduce over crowding and slow processing times at the city’s Central Booking and Intake Center. The state-run facility is a centralized jail designed to process arrests made by all city police precincts and is the gateway into the criminal justice system of suspects taken into custody in the city of 640,000 people.

In the last 3 months, over 80 arrestees were released from the Central Booking facility without being formally charged. In April this year, a temporary restaining order was issued by Judge Glynn against the facility to enforce the release of those held more than 24 hours after their intake who did not receive a hearing by a court commissioner. The commissioner sets bail, if granted, and formalizes the charges filed by the arresting officer. The charges are then entered into the state’s computer system where the case is tracked. The hearing also marks the date for the suspect’s right to a speedy trial.

The Friday hearing was called after the city mayor’s office of Martin O’Malley filed a motion to join a lawsuit that was brought by public defenders on behalf of those criminally detained at the facility. In Maryland, a hearing with a court commissioner within 24 hours of being arrested is state law. Judge Glynn presided over that lawsuit which led to the temporary restraining order. The order is to remain in effect until November.

Aides to O’Malley are seeking help from his court to implement and then monitor procedural changes at Central Booking, and made sharp criticisms of state public safety officials. One mayor’s aide said, ”We continue to offer management solutions, and they are accepted. But you know what? I don’t have time to run [Central Booking], nor does the police department.”

Judge Glynn expressed concern during the hearing that a purely judicial remedy may not be the answer, and said, “If I find that it is a hopeless disaster… what can I do about that?” He peppered parties to the suit with questions and suggested there is the possibility that political action, not court intervention, may be needed to solve what city and police officials call inefficient management practices by the state.

Glynn also requested parties to the suit to report back on what happened to the 80+ arrestees who were released so far as a result of the restraining order. The suspect could be re-arrested if officers knew the circumstances of the release, but police say that would take time and money to work out. An arrestee released without seeing a court commissioner has as the only record of the offense the hand written charging document by the officer.

The Maryland attorney general’s office representing the corrections officers said at the hearing that city police are part of the problem by not filing charging documents at Central Booking when the arrestee is delivered and processing begins. The state must accept the prisoners, but cannot move forward without the necessary documents. They also say city police sometimes flood the facility, which can create temporary backlogs.

Central Booking was designed to process 60,000 suspects a year, but currently handles nearly 100,000. It was built to accommodate 900 people at any one time, but normally crowds in 1,200. Arrestees describe conditions in holding cells with no room to sit on the floor, and being crammed in with people who suffer with health problems or drug addicts who vomit from withdrawal.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/OH-WY

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Harvard hosts conference on technological future of news media

Friday, April 1, 2005

Harvard University recently hosted a symposium called “Whose News? Media, Technology and the Common Good” at its Nieman Foundation for Journalism. Held March 3-4 and providing a certain amount of video to be rebroadcast through the web, the event was widely commented on by both bloggers and traditional media.

Among the participants was Richard Sambrook, Director of the BBC World Service and Global News Division, which has taken on the challenge of incorporating the voices of citizen journalists into their news gathering and presentation process. At what he calls the “community level”, the BBC is engaging a project called “Digital Storytelling” in which they are assisting and working with individuals in the recording and production of videos that “document their lives and report and cull things of importance to them”, which the BBC has then distributed by a variety of means. They are also encouraging participation in issues of citizen concern at the national and international levels.

Some participants such as co-creator of the seminar, Matt Thompson expressed concern over the growing centralization of the ownership of mainstream news media in the hands of a few corporate sponsors, at the same time it incorporates these growing sources of audience information. “I think that people are looking forward to a media that can truly respond to them, even if the…corporate centralization aspects of it in this giant ‘Googlezon’ entity give many people pause” quoting a MetaFilter.com thread to the effect, “I for one welcome our new Googlezon overlords.”

There was some discussion of the traditional media and its engagement with recent issues of national importance. “I think there’s been a massive media failure across the board…there’s been an institutional failure.”, said MediaChannel Executive Editor Danny Schechter in discussing his film, “WMD: Weapons of Mass Distortion”. He suggested two basic fixes including “more diversity of perspective…let’s have a real debate and discussion” and “don’t take everything at face value and check facts and look at perspectives from other countries.” He decried what he called “groupthink” in American media and called for “more feisty independent journalists, and more watchdog, less lapdog.”

However, some other critics have elsewhere expressed concerns about the actual independence and diversity of webloggers and other non-traditional media as an antidote to perceived media bias. For example, there is often a perceived lack of race or sex diversity among top bloggers. Steven Levy, a senior editor of Newsweek, has recently written a column addressing concerns about the over-representation of white males among top bloggers on the Internet. Technorati.com, a website which describes itself as “the authority on what is happening on the real-time web”, maintains a list of the top 100 blogs that was used as the basis for his column. However, others such as Heather Mac Donald at National Review have pointed out that there are no actual barriers to participation to anyone who wishes to engage in blogging, and so such imbalances in representation are probably not the result of personal bias.
