Andrea Muizelaar on fashion, anorexia, and life after ‘Top Model’

Monday, November 26, 2007

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.

The Importance Of Detox In Pasadena Alcohol Treatment Programs

  • Click Here For More Specific Information On:
  • Xr Health

byAlma Abell

All patients coming into an alcohol treatment program in any treatment center in Pasadena will need first to complete a detoxification program. This will be an important part of their recovery, allowing the body to remove the toxins and to begin to bring the systems of the body back to their natural states.

There is a significant risk to patients during the detox component of their alcohol treatment, particularly if they have a lengthy history of alcohol abuse. This is because the effects of long-term alcohol use impact virtually every system in the body.

Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome

A potentially deadly condition known as Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome can occur in individuals with chronic alcohol abuse histories. For this reason, most of these detox programs are operated under medical supervision.

A doctor will remain with the patient to ensure that the patient doesn’t develop this syndrome. For those with a signification addiction, it is not uncommon for these potential life-threatening changes in the body to occur within the first few days of detox.

An alcohol treatment program will use staff that is well-trained and experience in all of the signs and symptoms of the condition. Medications to control the seizures and spikes in blood pressure that can occur at this time are highly effective in reducing the symptoms and reducing the risk.

Symptoms

Even with medications to control the symptoms, most people with significant and chronic alcohol abuse will feel physical as well as mental changes during the detox. These can include:

  • Extreme sweating or feelings of being cold

  • Shaky hands and tremors throughout the body

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Headaches

  • Insomnia and agitation

These symptoms will often be seen over the first few hours, and some patients will also develop auditory and visual hallucinations. These will often subside within the first few days, and there are medications that can help to prevent these issues which can provoke anxiety in patients during those first few days of alcohol treatment.

The more serious and extreme delirium tremens or DTs include a ramping up of all the symptoms, and typically start within two to three days in detox. This is a critical time for medical supervision in the alcohol treatment in Pasadena as the patient can experience changes in heartbeat, high blood pressure, seizures and extreme disorientation and confusion.

The medication doctor at the alcohol treatment center will determine the best types of medications and treatments during the detox. Although medications can be effective, they are used with caution and only under medical supervision.

At A.S.A.P, we provide a fully supervised detox component to our alcohol treatment options. Patients can complete just the detox of the detox and treatment based on their needs. To learn more visit us at https://www.facebook.com/Alcohol-Substance-Abuse-Programs-116118161781635/

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

Greece declines Finland’s offer of helicopters, personnel to help fight forest fires

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Greece has declined Finland’s offer of three firefighting helicopters and 25 firefighters.

The offer had been made as a result of a request by Greece for aid with the forest fires Greece is currently experiencing. Greece had stressed at the time that the most urgent need was for fixed-wing aircraft with water-bombing capabilities, assets Finland does not possess.

The Greek authorities said that the equipment Finland had offered was not suited to the task it had been proposed for. Ole Norrback, current Finnish ambassador to Greece, has already said that Finland is in a better position to aid with reforestation efforts once the fires have been quenched.

Ten April Fool’s pranks of 2009

Friday, April 3, 2009

April Fools’ Day pranks harmlessly pervaded worldwide again this year. Media outlets and internet sites have joined family, office workers, and friends to provide a wide variety of practical jokes. Ireland, France, and the United States celebrate April Fools all day, whereas a few countries celebrate jokes only until noon such as the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa.

Car and Driver claimed that GM and Chrysler were ordered out of NASCAR by the White House by the end of 2009 in order to receive any more government loans. There are press releases about this short-lived prank which received controversial feedback.

The Swiss Tourism Board has announced that volunteers were desperately needed, The Association of Mountain Cleaners “makes sure that our holiday guests can always enjoy perfect mountains. Using brooms, brushes, water and muscle power, they clean the rocks of any bird droppings.”

This year Gmail produced a new autopilot feature for April 1, 2009 which can read your email and automatically respond to every message.

BMW released its new Magnetic Tow Technology which allows your BMW to magnetically attach to the vehicle ahead of you. This enhanced technology allows the driver to remove their foot from the gas pedal and turn off the motor.

The Guardian proposed its move to Twitter, which would allow the newspaper to fit its article content into 140 character messages or “tweets”. Included in this venture was the archiving of past events reported by The Guardian, such as, “1927 OMG first successful transatlantic air flight wow, pretty cool! Boring day otherwise *sigh*”

Google’s technological break through for April Fool’s Day was CADIE, (Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity). By extracting internet search patterns combined with Brain Search, a part of CADIE technology, Google can now search your thoughts and memories.

Wikipedia even fooled Fox News who claimed that “every item on the home page of the user-generated site Wikipedia is fake. The featured Wikipedia article regaled the “Museum of Bad Art” in Boston.” However, each item on the main page was based on reality — even news articles such as NASA reports a shower of diamonds over the Republic of Sudan, which was based on a meteorite which passed over Sudan whose fragments did reveal diamonds upon discovery.

The Conficker Internet worm had been in the news warning of a worst case scenario when computers worldwide would be affected by the virus. Even the chief security adviser for Microsoft, Ed Gibson, didn’t want to make any predictions about what would happen. Experts just knew that it was set to go off on April 1. Several anomalous happenings were attributed to Conficker including Leroy “Mac” MacElrie who claimed to be the programmer of the Conficker worm and turned himself in to police.

Hotels.com ran an advertisement offering hotel room bookings on the moon which would be offered on European websites starting at £800 a night.

Qualcomm ingeniously revealed a new wireless networking technology called wireless convergence. Making use of the flight patterns of pigeons. They then use innovative solutions to converge the birds with wolves to protect the internal improvements.

Media outlets were not the only ones pulling pranks. Gaming websites across the internet Blizzard, Joystiq, and affiliates posted reviews and announcements of games with tongue in cheek. YouTube offered viewers a unique April Fool’s experience as videos were offered upside down. In Ireland, U2 fans received a U2opia concert on a shopping centre roof top concert rather than the real thing.

US lawmakers and rights advocates question CIA tape destruction

Saturday, December 8, 2007

U.S. Congressional Democrats are asking the Justice Department to investigate whether the CIA’s destruction of videotapes documenting the interrogation of terrorism suspects amounts to obstruction of justice.

The acknowledgement by Central Intelligence Agency Director Michael Hayden that his agency destroyed the interrogation videotapes in 2005 sparked a firestorm of criticism among Congressional Democrats. They suggested the tapes could have provided key evidence in ongoing trials brought by terrorism suspects who are alleging they were tortured.

Senator Ted Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, said, “What would cause the CIA to take this action? The answer is obvious – cover up. The agency was desperate to cover up damning evidence of their practices.”

Human Rights Watch’s Senior Counterterrorism Counsel commented to Google news saying, “The CIA was well aware that its interrogations crossed a line considered by many to be torture. Now some in the CIA may also be guilty of obstruction of justice as well – a serious felony that carries a possible 20 year sentence. There needs to be a serious criminal investigation, and those who have committed crimes should be prosecuted and convicted.”

The Democratic chairmen of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees are vowing to investigate, and other Democrats are calling on the Justice Department to do the same.

“You cannot destroy material if there is an ongoing investigation. There is a law against it,” said Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

At the White House, spokeswoman Dana Perino said President Bush only learned of the matter two days ago, after he was briefed by CIA Director Hayden.

“He has no recollection of being made aware of the tapes or their destruction before yesterday,” said Perino.

Perino defended the CIA interrogation program as legal and critical to national security. She said President Bush supports General Hayden’s explanation that the tapes were destroyed to protect the identities of the interrogators.

But the Senate’s number two Democrat, Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, rejected that argument:

“The defence of the CIA is that they wanted to protect the identity of those CIA employees who were engaged in the interrogation,” said Durbin. “Mr. [Senate] President, that is not a credible defence. We know that it is possible, in fact, easy, to cover the identity and faces of those who were involved in any videotape. Something more was involved here.”

The tapes, which documented the use of tough interrogation techniques against key terror suspects in 2002, were destroyed three years later, at a time when there was increasing pressure from defence lawyers to obtain videotapes of detainee interrogations and as Congress had been probing allegations of torture.

The Bush administration has maintained it does not use torture, but refuses to say what techniques are used by intelligence agencies in interrogations of terror suspects.

Why A Little Goes A Long Way With Table Top Trade Show Displays

April, 2015 byadmin

A larger trade show display, such as the 20 by 20 booths, are not the only types of booths than can make an impact at a trade show. When you choose the right design, tabletop trade show displays can be just as effective and save you money and space.

A large misconception regarding trade show booths is the bigger the better – the bigger you go, the more results you will see. However, this is not completely true. If you organize your booth space well and create a look with graphics that really make a statement, a portable, table top display can be as effective as larger convention booths.

Table top displays are extremely affordable and offered in a number of shapes that will help you to stand out during an event. Some of the tabletop displays that are currently available are highlighted here.

Pop Up Displays

These are most well-known for their ease of assembly and vibrant, crisp graphics. These are fabric table top displays that come in both six and eight foot size options. A nice feature of these booths is that the graphics are able to be interchanged to create a new look from show to show.

The Hybrid Table Top Display

This is one of the latest offerings when it comes to table top displays for trade shows. They are called hybrids because they integrate the traditional construction of a booth with modern materials. You can also attach lights to these options to illuminate your entire booth.

Green Booths

More and more trade show exhibitors are going green with their displays by using recyclable materials for the frame, shelves and graphic panels. They even use LED lighting to ensure energy efficiency. There are a number of configurations and sizes available that will create an attractive tabletop booth.

Fabric Tension Displays

These booths feature fabric pulled over the frame in a type of pillowcase manner. This provides a wrinkle free, flawless look. This type of display has a 3D appearance and only takes a few minutes to set up. You can also change out the graphics in order to create a fresher look from show to show.

Even when you have a limited budget, you can create a great looking boot at your next trade show. Simply find which option of table top displays are best for you and then customize it for your business or brand.

NSW Supreme Court upholds non-publication order for lawsuit filed against Australia’s richest person

Friday, September 16, 2011

The Supreme Court of New South Wales has upheld a non-publication order protecting details of a lawsuit filed against Australia’s richest person, Gina Rinehart, from being published. The lawsuit filed by Rinehart’s daughter, Hope Rinehart Welker, is a dispute based on a trust fund created by Rinehart’s father, Lang Hancock.

The non-publication order was upheld based on the family’s wealth, image and any influence the details revealed in court may have on business details. The beneficiaries of the Hope Margaret Hancock Trust are Gina Rinehart, and her four adult children: John, Bianca, Hope and Ginia.

Rinehart is estimated to be worth $10 billion and is the current chairman of Hancock Prospecting, an iron ore business she inherited from her father.
