Cyprus Finance Minister Michael Sarris resigns amid bailout talks

Wednesday, April 3, 2013

Cypriot Finance Minister Michael Sarris resigned yesterday due to public discontent with his handling of the negotiations over a bailout from international lenders and a state investigation into the circumstances that pushed the country close to a financial collapse. According to Cyprus based media organizations, Sarris has been succeeded by the current Labor Minister Haris Georgiades

Sarris attributed his resignation to the probe announced earlier today, admitting that he may also be targeted by judges as they try to find out why the country was forced to seek a bailout. “I believe that in order to facilitate the work of [investigators] the right thing would be to place my resignation at the disposal of the president of the republic, which I did,” said Sarris, who was appointed as minister only in February.

Sarris’s resignation came shortly after he signed a €10 billion (US$13 billion) rescue deal with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund that could see depositors with €100,000 lose up to 60% of their savings. An earlier version of the deal, which called for all Cypriot bank depositors to sacrifice part of their savings, was later scrapped following a wave of popular outrage.

The bailout deal includes measures that strip Cyprus of its status as a financial hub and force the local government to impose limits on cash transfers lest depositors try to channel their money to banks abroad.

Major US bankruptcy reform bill signed into law

Thursday, April 21, 2005

U.S. President George W. Bush signed into law Wednesday a major bankruptcy reform bill, making the most sweeping changes to the laws of personal bankruptcy in the past two decades. Bill S.256 is predicted to reduce the chances of filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy for 30,000 to 210,000 families per year, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute.

The legislation was strongly opposed by some consumer advocates and by some Democrats in Congress, who complained about the lack of debate on exemptions they attempted to introduce and tried to derail the passage of the bill. Those who are unable to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy will then be forced to file under Chapter 13, which requires payment of some debts by order of a judge based on the financial resources of the debtor.

Opponents said the bill will end a chance for a fresh start in the financial lives of the American people by keeping them in debt to collection agencies, as well as credit card companies and banks who have made it easy to obtain high credit limits amid mounting consumer debt.

In his remarks before signing the bill, which he supported, Bush said, “The bipartisan bill I’m about to sign makes common-sense reforms to our bankruptcy laws. By restoring integrity to the bankruptcy process, this law will make our financial system stronger and better. By making the system fairer for creditors and debtors, we will ensure that more Americans can get access to affordable credit.”

The bankruptcy bill received a 302-126 approval in the house, after receiving a 74-25 vote in the Senate last month following strong, mostly partisan debate.

The US bankruptcy system was established in 1898. It allowed judges and debtors to come to terms with the costly medical bills that can follow a relative’s death, or a family illness. Such cases form nearly half of all bankruptcies filed in the USA, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute.

Now many of those people will have to work out repayment plans suitable to creditors instead of having debts erased by a judge, according to the new law, which takes effect in six months.

In the past, a judge or court representative would calculate an individual’s income and subtract necessities of life to come up with a practical repayment plan of some debt. The new law stipulates that a graph, showing the poverty level in whichever state the consumer is living will be the criteria. It assumes that if people can subsist at that poverty level, then everything over that can be used to repay creditors.

Additionally, a provision that allowed debtors to file their own Chapter 7 fresh start bankruptcy has been changed to require a lawyer, paid by the debtor, to do the filing.

The new law also erased “usury” provisions in lending laws, with some lawmakers saying that paying 30 percent interest was not too much when a debtor was behind on payments.

But Bush said that credit will “be more affordable because when bankruptcy is less common, credit can be extended to more people at better rates,” meeting demands of the credit card companies which they have been pressing for the last eight years.

“The big winners under the new law will be the special interests that literally wrote it, particularly the credit card industry,” said Travis B. Plunkett, legislative director of the Consumer Federation of America. “This is particularly ironic because reckless and abusive lending practices by credit card companies have driven many Americans to the brink of bankruptcy.”

The forces arrayed on the losing side of this bill said it will hurt low-income working people, single mothers, minorities, and elderly and will end a safety net for people who have lost jobs or face major medical bills. People who fail (refuse) to pay or refuse to go to court will punished by a fine and or arrest warrant made out in their name. About fifty thousand Americans will be punished by a fine and or warrant about three thousand Americans every year will go to jail under the new bankruptcy law. For some people this will be a third strike so they will be put in jail for life.

But Mallory Duncan, a lawyer for the National Retail Federation, said “Bankruptcy has gone from a stigma to a financial planning tool for many.”

New personal bankruptcy filings have increased from 172,423 in 1978 to 1,599,986 last year, an increase of 828% during that time; however, it edged down slightly last year.

About 2 percent to 13 percent of those who dissolve their debts in Chapter 7 bankruptcy each year in exchange for forfeiting some assets will be disqualified from doing so under the law, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute.

Bankruptcy lawyers anticipate a rush to the courthouse to beat the six-month window before the new reforms take effect.

Solicitor of presenter Stuart Hall denies indecent assault

Saturday, December 8, 2012

Louise Straw, a solicitor representing UK television and radio presenter Stuart Hall, has said Hall is innocent of charges of indecent assault. In relation to complaints about alleged events between 1974 and 1984 involving three females between eight and seventeen years of age, Hall was charged with three counts of indecent assault after being arrested Wednesday.

Hall, who has been released on bail, is expected to appear at Preston Magistrates’ Court on January 7.

Saying Hall was not able to provide any additional comment at present, Straw criticised the apparent “systematic, measured leaks to the media, which have given a misleading impression of what this case is about.” She stressed it was “a matter of concern” given the recent release of the Leveson Report. Straw also said because police arrested Hall at his residence in the town of Wilmslow in Cheshire, he “was not afforded the opportunity to attend voluntarily at the police station. In due course, the decision that he should be arrested will be the subject of some scrutiny”.

John Dilworth of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said there was “sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and … it is in the public interest to prosecute this case.” Stating Hall was innocent, Straw explained: “There will be a trial and his defence will then be in the public domain.”

Hall — who has recently been featuring as an association football commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live — will not be working at the BBC as police inquiries continue because of “the very serious nature of these charges”, a spokesperson for the corporation has said.

Hall, who notably presented UK game show It’s a Knockout, was given an OBE at the New Year Honours for services to charity and broadcasting. His broadcasting career has lasted some fifty years.

New Zealand delays emissions trading scheme

Monday, November 17, 2008

New Zealand’s incoming government will delay the implementation of the country’s emissions trading scheme (ETS) pending a full inquiry into climate change.

The decision was revealed in the National Party’s confidence and supply agreement with the ACT Party. The agreement commits National to a review of climate change policy by a special select committee of Parliament.

The review will include the emissions trading scheme and possible alternatives to it, as well as “hear[ing] competing views on the scientific aspects of climate change” and considering whether responding to climate change is economically worthwhile. Implementation of the ETS would be delayed until the review is complete — a process expected to take at least a year.

The ETS requires companies emitting greenhouse gases to cover their emissions with permits. The legislation was passed on September 10, 2008, and provides for a phased implementation, with forestry entering the scheme immediately, industrial and energy sector emissions entering in 2010, and transport fuels in 2011.

The National Party won a victory over the Labour Party in last week’s elections, and has formed a new government cabinet, led by prime minister-elect John Key.

Family of Chile’s former leader Augusto Pinochet arrested on embezzlement charges

Friday, October 5, 2007

The widow and five children of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet have been arrested in Chile on embezzlement charges. They are accused of illegally transferring USD27 million to foreign bank accounts during Pinochet’s rule from 1973 to 1990. Seventeen of Pinochet’s former associates, including his former personal secretary and three retired army generals, were also arrested.

Pinochet had been charged with tax evasion, fraud, and embezzlement following a 2004 U.S. Senate investigation. In December 2006, he died without having been brought to trial. However, Chilean Judge Carlos Cerda said there were “solid indications” that Pinochet’s family and associates had also “participated in the misuse of fiscal funds”.

Jose Miguel Vivanco of Human Rights Watch called the decision “an extremely important development for Chile’s democracy and the rule of law. Going after the relatives of the powerful and the fortunes they amassed used to be considered off limits,” he said.

Pinochet family lawyer Pablo Rodriguez said he was “astonished by this illegal and abusive decision by the judge”, and that he was “sure that it will be reversed by the Court of Appeals.”

How to Make Your Business Website Show Up on Google With Latent Semantic Indexing

by

David Oltz

Are you taking advantage of Latent Semantic Indexing? If your business website does not include articles that take advantage of Internet Marketing through Latent Semantic Indexing, then you are missing out, not only on a lot of Google search engine traffic, but also on a lot of Google search engine business.

Would you like to double, triple, even quadruple the number of hits your business website gets from Google search engines through Latent Semantic Indexing? You can! In practically no time at all, you can transform your business website into an internet marketing masterpiece! But how? How do you take advantage of Latent Semantic Indexing?

In order for Latent Semantic Indexing to work for you and your internet website, the first thing you need to do is understand what Latent Semantic Indexing and how it works. So how does this Internet Marketing masterpiece attract so many Google search engine hits? It\\’s no secret that Google has upped its internet marketing and search engine optimization criteria. Instead of any random website popping up as a result of a Google search engine query, now only a business website, or websites, that actually have importance and relevance to the Google search engine query pop up in Google search engine results. This is Latent Semantic Indexing.

Latent Semantic Indexing works basically like this. If you have a business website that specializes in selling a certain product to a customer, say customized T shirts, then it would obviously be ideal if your business website would show up as a result of a Google search engine query for customized T shirts. This happens by making sure that your business website takes advantage of optimal internet marketing as well as Latent Semantic Indexing to include as many key terms and word that have to do with customized T shirts as possible. In other words, you don\\’t want somebody to perform a Google search engine query for customized T shirts and end up being directed to a random pet adoption website. You, as well as those performing this Google search engine search query, want to be directed to a customized T shirt website as a result of a Google search engine query for customized T shirts. This happens through Latent Semantic Indexing.

The best way for your business website to take advantage of Latent Semantic Indexing and internet marketing to the extreme is to include several articles on your website that include a key word, as well as key terms, several times. This key word and key terms must have to do with customized T shirts and be something that somebody on a search for customized T shirts would want to find. For example, with Latent Semantic Indexing, your internet marketing campaign would include writing articles that talk about your key word, customized T shirts, as well as key terms, such as comfortable, customizable, and washable. This is the best way to make Latent Semantic Indexing work for you, and drive as much Google search engine query traffic to your business website as possible.

Building Self Confidence When Networking

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

Submitted by: Elton Hoeschen

In the launch of How To Build A Profitable Business Network (BPN for short) we have invited site visitors and clients to tell us their biggest challenge when it comes to the process of transforming contacts into relationships and relationships into lucrative business.

The number 1 answer was unsuprisingly Lack of self-assurance .

Let s briefly take a look at why this is with two stories:

In 2008 I set up my very first business club in my home town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch in Central England. In a very short time it grew to become a very successful and sought after club to belong to.

We approached the local motor vehicle repair and recovery company to see if they might be interested in joining us. Wonderfully they did and their Operations Manager Martin grew to become a regular participant at our fortnightly breakfast and lunchtime meetings.

It is reasonable to suggest that Martin was truly and visibly frightened when he started, not unlike like a Rabbit in the headlights. We all struggled to get a peep out of him. However after a few meetings he did get going and it wasn t before long that his self-assurance in the organization was there for all to see.

In my capacity as an executive coach I work with senior executives to develop and hone their ability and confidence to persuade and influence others. One of my clients is a Financial Director in a rapidly growing multi-national UK based business. She is ready to move into an operational role as an MD of one of the businesses.

She was terrified when we brought up the subject of networking at events where a) she had no agenda other than to mix and mingle and b) she would have to introduce herself or be introduced to new people. Give her a spreadsheet, some numbers and a purpose to a meeting then she was unbelievably incredible, add some ambiguity then she was in her words lost not knowing what to do or how to do it .

These stories illustrate that in networking you will be meeting people for the first time and, for a number of people, this can be very scary. Unless you have been brought up both through childhood and your career to spend time mingling with lots of people and developing your social interaction skills you may struggle.

You also need to be able to put over in a very short concise way what it is you do, why you are so good and why the person you are speaking to should spend some time with you learning about your products and services.

You may be called on to speak to groups and for many public speaking is a huge fear. In the UK it is in the top three fears of adults along with heights and creepy crawlies.

You may also decide that you want to master the rapidly changing world of Social Media.

Put all this together and you have many reasons why you may lack self-confidence:

You may well be entering territory which is taking you right out of your comfort zone

You see others who seem to be able to do it all effortlessly and this can be quite intimidating

You recognise that you have a steep learning curve and all learning takes effort with many bumps along the way

You may be putting a great deal of effort in with minimal reward

You may truly despise the whole idea of marketing and selling yourself and your products and services.

So what are you able to do to develop self confidence? Successful business networking and indeed a successful life relies on have a sense of certainty about what it is that you do, being excellent at how well you do it and the persistence to keep going.

There are a number of hallmarks of confident people.

1.Firstly you need a strong sense of purpose about what it is you want to do, why you want to do it and a plan to help you get there

2.Secondly you should accept that you are going to have to master some new skills and model people who have already been where you aspire to go

3.Next you need to diarise time to work on self-development

4.Next you need to take consistent and purposeful action

5.You need to accept seek, accept and act on feedback from people whose opinions you value

6.Finally you need to constantly record and review your progress and adapt your approach as you move forward

We put together the video programme How To Build A Profitable Business Network to help you with step 2. BPN is there to help you short circuit your route to success.

Most people start networking with the idea that you just start attending events and see what happens . Successful people don t do this. They learn from people who already have achieved what they want and they model what they do. BPN is the product of watching and learning from true masters of networking.
