Home Improvement Made Simple – Tips And Tricks!

by

Bartholomew Erlandsen

When you do home improvements yourself, you can save money and have a really nice, custom home. There is a lot to consider when making home improvements yourself though, so consider these helpful tips.

If you are seriously considering buying a home, get it inspected by a professional. You will not have to depend on your own judgement and what the seller is trying to tell you. Having a professional that is neutral will also be beneficial to both parties.

Paint the gaps where paneling will meet. Regardless of how precisely you install the paneling, there is usually a spot where the wall shows through. This can be prevented by taking a few minutes to measure the area in which the panels will adjoin. If you have paneling, make sure your paint color matches!

Always make sure to cover your furniture and floors when painting. Taking this precaution will save you from wet paint staining carpets or floors. You could make use of old newspapers to cover your floor inexpensively. Plastic sheeting or inexpensive paint cloths will work, too.

To keep air from leaving through the doors, get some sealant strips and draft excluders. Draft excluders go under the door and keep air from going out or coming in. Sealant strips do the same thing and fit around the door frames. You can find them at many hardware stores.

When it is time for major home improvement renovations, look into “age-in-place” measures you can apply to your home. Age-in-place refers to a design philosophy that accounts for the inevitable aging of homeowners over the span of their ownership. Whether you renovate your home to live in forever or if you plan to sell it, these kinds of additions can boost value and comfort.

When doing home improvement work, the wise homeowner will spend money on high-quality fixtures and materials before spending it on pricey furnishings and decor. You want to invest your money in projects that will improve the value of your home, not merely its appearance. For example, a quality front door and hardwood floors will bring a much larger price than holding an open house with a designer sofa.

If you find some leaks in your home, you should consider replacing your roof. If you ignore it, mayhem could ensue. Engage a reliable roofing specialist to evaluate the problem and give you an estimate. The roofer should have plenty of experience.

Plastic 2-liter bottles are an excellent kitchen storage option. You can see what is inside them, and can store and protect dry goods like flour or sugar. You can put them in the freezer or even in the fridge. When you require the contents, just remove its cap and pour.

Keep up with your septic tank continuously. You can buy products that can keep your septic tank from overflowing. When you are going to be digging, make sure you know where the septic tank is located. A plan of your home may be needed in order to prevent damaging the tank.

In order to makeover your home very quickly, you can use new paneling on your walls. This will help you make your home feel and look newer. If you do not enjoy the look of the paneling, it is easy to get rid of.

If you aren’t good with a hammer and nails, you can still make improvements to your home by decorating the inside. Add new materials like velvet or silk, or paint rooms in new colors to create a fresh, modern atmosphere. Remember the tips in this article for great home improvement!

Learning as much as you could about fireplace mantel is pretty normal. In truth, folks do this constantly. It is important that you prevent yourself from having information overload. German and Swedish foreign ministers agree on Gaza standpoint

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Stockholm, Sweden — On Monday, the German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle visited Stockholm for his first time. He met with Sweden’s foreign minister Carl Bildt, to coordinate in-depth views on matters such as the situation in Gaza and Kyrgyzstan.

Wikinews was at a press briefing by the ministers. Carl Bildt started by saying: “We work closely together in the European Union, now we had the opportunity to sit down and go through the agenda and coordinate issues. The relations between Sweden and Germany are good, and that is hardly news.”

Guido Westerwelle continued, commenting that “we have foremost discussed the situation in the Middle East. We emphasize that the decision of the Israeli government is a step in the correct direction, but we are convinced that there must be a total opening of the Gaza area. We want to support the moderate forces and help the life of people.”

“This is also our common European view, and last week at a foreign minister meeting we agreed that full opening of the Gaza area is the goal. We work to influence our discussion partners in the Middle East, in particular the Israeli government, and also consider that the two-state solution without doubt is the only solution for peace.”

Carl Bildt mentioned that they would have the opportunity for a short walk in scenic Old Town, Stockholm, and a short boat trip, while discussing further issues.

When asked about the situation in Kyrgyzstan, Carl Bildt told the reporters that “the situation is exceedingly worrying; the information we had over the weekend talks about the order of 2,000 dead and the order of 400,000 people who left their homes. This is in a very fragile part of central Asia.”

“What we see necessary now is first to stabilize the situation quickly, then to be certain our aid is reaching people. There are talks about an international civilian police mission, to build the confidence which is a necessity for people to return. The situation is alarming.”

Guido Westerwelle agreed, and said that “the first we do is protection of our European citizens, the second and very important is to protect the refugees so they have the chance to come to safe circumstances, and thirdly to stabilize the situation. Germany has started very quickly with a programme to help the refugees.”

Fiji joins the Non-Aligned Movement

Saturday, June 26, 2010

Fijian Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama announced Wednesday night that Fiji had joined the Non-Aligned Movement.

Bainimarama described this decision as way to refocus Fiji’s relationships away from its traditional trading partners of Australia and New Zealand, towards countries outside of the South Pacific. Joining the Non-Aligned Movement would support the “Look North policy which involves developing relationships with countries outside the southern Pacific sphere,” he said. The Fijian Cabinet of Ministers had agreed to start the process of becoming a member of the Non-Aligned Movement in late February.

The Non-Aligned Movement is an organisation of states that consider themselves to be in a position of neutrality towards the major powers and the associated power blocs. The stated purpose of the organisation according to the Havana Declaration of 1979 is to ensure “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries” in their “struggle against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, and all forms of foreign aggression, occupation, domination, interference or hegemony as well as against great power and bloc politics.”

Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, stated that today’s Non-Aligned Movement “has adopted the broader principles of multilateralism, equality and mutual non-aggression and has morphed into a tool for strengthening leverage when negotiating with the developed world.” As of the 2009 conference, there were 118 member countries and 17 observer countries representing almost two-third of the United Nations member nations and over half of the world population.

This decision came shortly after a meeting with Mohammed Omar Abdulla the undersecretary of the Department of Economic Development for Abu Dhabi. Bainimarama was in Abu Dhabi along with the leaders of several other small pacific island states for a summit with the Arab League entitled “Prospects for Cooperation between the Arab world and the Pacific Islands.”

Fiji has been looking for trade partnerships with non-traditional partners such as China and India, due to trade sanctions imposed by Fiji’s traditional trading partners Australian and New Zealand following the 2006 coup.

England wins first match with 1-0 victory in Group B

Saturday, June 10, 2006

England beat Paraguay 1-0 in a bruising encounter among the shadows of the Commerzbank Arena, Frankfurt, Saturday.

In the sunshine and heat, which reached 30 degrees Celsius, it became a physical game that saw three bookings and the referee frequently blowing his whistle.

England got the perfect start scoring after just 3 minutes from a David Beckham freekick. Swung in from the left of the field, the ball clipped the head of Paraguayan captain Carlos Gamarra on its way to the net.

However; the game was not attractive for the neutral. Both sides looked nervous and no side got control of the midfield. Passes were frequently misplaced and attacks from both teams lacked cutting edge.

Paraguay lost number one goalkeeper Justo Villa to an injury in the sixth minute of the game. Aldo Borbadilla replaced him.

Missing Wayne Rooney, arguably their team’s most skilled player, whose recent injury though healed had ruled him out for this match, the noisy England fans in the crowd didn’t have much to sing about except the victory.

England’s Swedish manager Sven-Göran Eriksson‘s side had more possession but failed to score more than the one early goal. On their part, Paraguay was unable to capitalise on a number of English defensive errors to get an equaliser.

England next face Trinidad and Tobago while Paraguay face the England manager’s home nation, Sweden.

How to watch Win Win Movie 2011 free online

Disheartened attorney Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti), who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach, stumbles across a star athlete (Alex Shaffer) through some questionable business dealings while trying to support his family. Just as it looks like he will get a double payday, the boys mother (Melanie Lynskey) shows up fresh from rehab and flat broke, threatening to derail everything.

Win Win is an oddity. It’s a movie about teenagers who are — gasp — intelligent, thoughtful, polite, and better off than their adult counterparts. Teenagers are often written as social misfits or drugged-out losers, or pigeonholed into some clichd clique. It’s always nice to see a movie that treats adolescents with respect. Perhaps I’m just tired of the same old formulaic high school drama movies, or I still have the horrendous Twelve rattling around in my brain from last year’s fest. Watching Win Win gave me hope that filmmakers out there may continue to create thought-provoking, poignant adolescent characters.

Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti) is a lawyer who’s struggling to pay all his bills. He runs his own practice, but the money isn’t exactly rolling in. He’s got a few clients he sees, a boiler that needs fixing, and absolutely no money to spare.

Mike’s client Leo Poplar is about to be declared incompetent by the state and forcefully put in a state care facility. In an act of desperation, Mike offers to become Leo’s guardian — partly because he’s a good guy, but also because Mike is able to pocket a $1,500 a month commission from Leo’s estate if he takes care of him. Mike, thinking of his family and his law practice, soon sticks Leo in an old folks’ home so they can take care of him and he can keep the money without doing any of the work. It’s one of those deals you know will come back to bite him.

When Mike heads over to Leo’s house to shut off the water he finds a kid sitting on the front porch. His name is Kyle, and he’s a thoughtful, intelligent teenage played brilliantly by newcomer Alex Shaffer.

Win Win Online Free 2011

Sure, he’s got his problems, but Kyle is a deep-thinking, considerate soul who knows a lot more than he’s letting on. He escaped his druggie mother in Ohio and traveled to New Jersey to see his grandpa Leo. Kyle soon builds a relationship with Mike and his wife Jackie (Amy Ryan). Mike coaches the local high school wrestling team; they soon find out that Kyle is basically a wrestling prodigy.

The true treat here really is Shaffer’s performance. Yes, Giamatti is good, and Amy Ryan definitely has some great moments, but Shaffer steals the show. He rips it out from under the big-name stars like a wrestler hooking his opponent’s ankle. He’s an enigma on-screen, talking in low dulcet tones. Even though he acts aloof, you can tell there’s much brewing just under the surface. He’s standoffish and distant, but also infinitely likable. Sure, most of the movie is predictable, but Alex Shaffer (like Jennifer Lawrence of last year’s festival) has arrived. You won’t want to miss it.

Tom McCarthy, acclaimed writer/director of “The Visitor” and “The Station Agent,” explores the allegiances and bonds between unlikely characters with a lighter touch in his new film. Struggling attorney Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti), who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach, becomes legal guardian of an elderly client in an attempt to help keep his practice afloat. When the client’s teenage grandson runs away from home and shows up on his grandfather’s doorstep, Mike’s family.

US fans turn out for 2012 Phoenix Comicon

Saturday, June 2, 2012

Phoenix, Arizona — Last weekend, Phoenix fans of comics, science fiction, horror, fantasy, cos-play, anime and manga, Society for Creative Anachronism, and more, marked a milestone as the city held its tenth annual Phoenix Comicon at the Phoenix Convention Center. The event — which is entirely the work of more than 700 volunteers according to coordinator Colin Aprill — generated around US$5 million for the “Valley of the Sun” during its four-day run. Wikinews was there.

As one unknown source from the crowd was overheard saying, “It’s all about the fans.” Descending into the hall by escalator gave a sense of the scale to the creativity in the center. Fans could be seen scattering about in a flurry of motion on their way from one event to another and producing their own spectacle, most in costume, on their way.

This year the four-day convention in the Valley was estimated to set a new attendance record as 30,000 visitors showed. Most were clothed in costumes that transformed themselves into Batmans, creeper box heads, furries, Lady and Knight couple, pirates, pixies, Star Trek officers, Star Wars’ Empire troopers, Superwomen, and zombies. One of the most common activities at Comicon was people taking photos of each other while they took turns posing or snapping shots.

The Camp family stopped intermittently to have their photos taken by others. The Camps were led by eldest brother Jim “Batman” Camp. He attended Comicon with his sister Tina “Good Witch” Camp, who brought her daughter Katie “Super Woman.” Sibling Tony Camp, who attended with his daughter Stella “Bat Girl,” was said to be “the instigator” behind the family’s turnout at Comicon. “You get to be dressed up and can act goofy, and you don’t feel weird because everybody is dressing up, too,” said Tony about the family-friendly event.

The exhibit hall was filled with artists and merchants selling comic books, trinkets, memorabilia, wares and keepsakes. Amidst the shoppers, the photo opportunities continued to attract the most attention. For all the star-studded autograph booths and an artist alley with famed comic book artists, the most fun was simply enjoying the presence of other fans in costume.

The Thirteenth Floor Haunted House took advantage of the photo-op activity by supplying monsters “Nemesis” and “Collosus” for more of this activity. Manager Tim Pugsley says the company owns five out of the top 1300 haunted houses in the United States. The monsters’ human counterparts remained anonymous on purpose. “The characters don’t get ruined that way,” said a handler.

Montana E. had his picture taken with “Nemesis” by friend Joey Deihl, while Eddie Deleon and young Raquel Munguia posed with “Collosus.”

Fans also gathered Saturday for a flash mob event, in which people danced or acted to Michael Jackson’s mega-hit song “Thriller”. An entertainment group calling themselves “The Zombie Chicks” attended the flash mob and then later drifted in trance through the exhibitor hall of the convention center. “We’re here for the performance, not for the stuff,” said Tori Hoganson, who pointed like a bored consumer at the trinkets in a stall. She was careful to use as few words as possible to speak her mind out of character before going back mindfully to her mindless performance. She was accompanied by her friends, who in human form are known as Emmalaine Wright and Lyle Yanak. The group was watched closely and held at bay by “The Keeper” Ben Fondren, who lurked nearby as a faceless shadow.

The fans also turned out to see big stars, like William Shatner, who portrayed Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek series; LeVar Burton, who is synonymous with the ship’s engineer Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation; or Jon Bernthal, who was the sometimes hero and sometimes anti-hero Shane Walsh in the TV series The Waking Dead.

Father and son John and David Phelps, who are both Star Trek fans, attended the event together and were excited to see Shatner. “He can be funny, but he’s also fun to laugh at,” said John Phelps with a smile. His son David liked to laugh at Shatner when the artist attempted to sing. Shatner has had an alternative “tongue-in-cheek” career singing hits such as “Common People” on the 2004 album Has Been.

Hunter Lewis got Jon Bernthal’s autograph, which came penned with the message, “I F@&#’in hate Zombies.” Zombies were the main source of the angst that bedeviled characters in his hit TV show. Hunter’s friends Justin Rose, Ryan Scola and Taylor Fagen also met with Bernthal in the autograph line. This was just one of many examples of how friends and family were bonding and sharing together in the spectacle throughout the convention center.

There were also breakout sessions for classes, performances, gaming, and crafts. Nyki Robertson Crosby, a.k.a. “Lady Thunder,” who is the matriarch of one of the largest houses for the Society for Creative Anachronism in the Phoenix area, sponsored a class on creating a “Basic T-shirt Tunic” so that anyone who wanted to attend an S.C.A. event in costume could fit in with a minimal investment in time, effort and money. She said the secret is to create a costume that could be one someone would wear between 600–1600 A.D. “We’re the Society of Creative Anachronism and not the Society of Creative Accuracy,” Robertson Crosby said.

The Phoenix Comicon was carnivalesque in its look and feel. And it spread well beyond the convention center as knights and Wonderland characters and more walked the streets of Phoenix and lunched and dined with the “civilians”. The civilians were the ones who kept asking, “What’s going on?”

They may have been “out of towners” visiting the “Valley of the Sun” between May 24–27, because after ten years, Phoenix now has an established tradition.

This year’s largest Comicon is to be Comic-Con International San Diego 2012, July 12–15 in California.

Oil spill hits Australia’s Sunshine coastline

Sunday, March 15, 2009

200,000 litres of oil leaked into waters off the coast of Brisbane from the Pacific Adventurer when their fuel tanks were damaged in rough seas on Wednesday. The figure is about ten times higher than the original estimate of twenty thousand litres of oil. The devastating diesel oil spill has spread along 60 kilometres (37 miles) of the Queensland coast. In addition, 31 containers with 620 tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertiliser flew overboard during the violent storm.

Questions are being asked why the Hong Kong cargo ship was out in seas with nine meter waves caused by Cyclone Hamish, a Category 5 tropical cyclone, as well as why the fertiliser containers were not properly secured. One of the overboard containers ruptured the hull of the Pacific Adventurer, causing between 30 to 100 tonnes of oil to spew from the severely damaged ship.

If the ammonium nitrate mixes with the heavy oil, an explosion could occur. None of the containers have been recovered. Some of these may float, but it is believed that they may have sunk which then may cause algal blooms.

Disaster zones have been declared at Bribie and Moreton Islands, and along the Sunshine coast.

The vessel’s owner, Swire Shipping, reported that a second leak began on Friday, when the ship began listing after docking at Hamilton for repairs. “As full soundings of the vessel’s tanks were being taken at the port to determine how much oil had leaked from the vessel, a small quantity of fuel oil escaped from the Pacific Adventurer,” it stated. The ship was brought upright, and a recovery vessel was used to suck up the oil from the water. The leak produced a 500m-long oil slick down the Brisbane River. Booms were placed around this oil spill so that a skimmer could clean up the second spill.

Swire Shipping could face clean up costs of AU$100,000 a day as well as fines up to AU$1.5million (US$977,000; £703,000) if found guilty of environmental breaches or negligence.

Sunshine Coast beaches are slowly starting to be reopened. The beach of Mooloolaba was still closed following reports of burning sensations from swimmers. 12 beaches remain closed; however, 13 have been reopened.

Over 300 state government and council workers are using buckets, rakes and spades in the clean up effort. Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbott says the majority will be gone by Sunday afternoon. The full environmental impact on wildlife is not yet known. One turtle and seven pelicans have been found covered in oil.

There are concerns that the drinking water of Moreton Island is at risk, as the island uses water from the underground water table near the oil spill site.

“Every bucketload of contaminated sand has to be removed from the island by barge, and each bucketload from a front-end loader weighs about one tonne. It’s just an impossible task,” said Mr Trevor Hassard of the Tangalooma Dolphin Education Centre.

The commercial fishing industry has suffered from the incident. Trawlers won’t resume operations until Sunday evening, and any catches will be tested for human consumption.

Freighter hits fishing boat in Gulf of Suez; thirteen dead

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

A freighter hit a fishing boat around midnight on Sunday morning in the Gulf of Suez in the Red Sea. Of the 40 Egyptian fisherman on board, thirteen are dead and thirteen more missing.

Survivor Al Sayyed Mohamed Arafat told local media he jumped from the fishing boat, named Badr al-Islam, as the container ship approached. He says he hung onto a wooden crate for four hours before rescue. Local authorities have promised compensation to each survivor.

A vessel, flagged in Panama, suspected to be involved in the collision has been detained by the military. The army said yesterday one victim raised the alarm by phone and the military sent four boats and a helicopter to commence search and rescue off the Gabal al-Zayt coastline.

A plane has since joined the search. The military say the fishing boat lacked safety equipment for emergency communications.

The detained ship was found south of the Gulf, near the port of Safaga. It was carrying 220 tonnes of cargo according to the General Authority for the Red Sea Ports.
