14,000-acre Southern California ‘Crown Fire’ at 82% containment, evacuation orders lifted

Sunday, August 1, 2010

Antelope Valley, California — The Crown Fire that has burned through 13,980 acres in the High Desert of Southern California since 2:32 pm (2232 UTC) Thursday was at 82% containment Saturday evening, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

On Friday high winds caused the fire to jump the California Aqueduct and spread into the city of Palmdale. Over 2,000 residents of Leona Valley, Ana Verde, and Rancho Vista were given mandatory evacuation orders. The sky was blanketed with thick orange pyrocumulus clouds and falling ash, making the air hard to breathe.

State Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger arrived in Palmdale on Friday to survey the burned areas. “We were very fortunate to not have fires for quite some time because the air temperature was cool and we didn’t have the experiencing of dry weather and all the winds and so on, but all of a sudden the fire season kicked in as if, ‘Here we are,'” Schwarzenegger said during a press conference. “But we are ready and we have luckily distributed resources all over the state of California, so we are ready at any given time.”

The fire has so far destroyed one house and three mobile homes, damaging the roof of another and burning car garages, horse stables, and other outbuildings. Most of the more seriously threatened homes were constructed recently from fire-proof materials, with walls coated in stucco, and fire-resistant plants in the yards. Although some roads are still closed to all traffic, all existing evacuation orders were lifted late Friday night and 500 residents of Rancho Vista were told to “shelter in place” until further notice. Despite the absence of mandatory evacuation orders, over 2,000 houses, 60 commercial buildings, and 100 outbuildings are still under threat.

Throughout the night, fire crews have been battling the wildfire, assisted by cooler temperatures and lighter-than-expected winds which have enabled them to establish containment lines. “Crews went out [Friday] night and did some great work trying to complete more lines and also trying to take care of what we call ‘cat eyes’ which are embers within the perimeter of the fire, so there will be much more work being done there today,” said LACFD Captain Roland Sprewell. “But of course we’re not going to rest on our laurels today…we’re going to be vigilantly watching the winds, especially in the ridge and down in the valleys.”

At the height of the fire, 1,700 firefighters from all over California were battling the flames, although as of 12:00 pm Saturday afternoon, it has been reduced to around 1,350 personnel. 16 fire camp crew have also assisted. 250 fire engines and four bulldozers have been used. In the air, 4 Boeing 747 supertankers, 1 McDonnell Douglas DC-10 tanker, and 6 modified Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters known as “Firehawks” have been dropping water and red Phos-Chek slurry. The Los Angeles Sheriffs Department also increased its presence in the Antelope Valley by bringing in response teams from stations outside the AV. This afternoon, the deployment has been scaled back to three teams as the fire stabilizes and further evacuation orders become unlikely.

Three firefighters have been injured battling the fire, although all injuries are minor. One sheriff deputy was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation but has since been released.

Use Chinese Gender Chart For Gender Selection

By Lok Yae

Feng Shui, Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and Tai Chi all come from the wisdoms of ancient Chinese. These techniques or knowledge were once considered as superstitious in the western world, but are now widely used in many civilized countries. The Chinese Gender Chart (aka Chinese Birth Calendar or Chinese Pregnancy Calendar) which is used to predict the gender of a baby, does not yet receive the respect from western eyes like other Chinese ancient wisdoms!

The amazing thing about the Chinese Gender Chart is that it can predict the gender of babies long before a mother’s conception and that its accuracy rate is higher than 90%. The prediction is only based on two factors: the mother’s age of conception and the month of conception (see http://www.chinesegenderchart.info/pregnancy-chart-gender-selection/howitwork.html.) So, if a baby is conceived in June when the woman is 30, she will give birth to a girl. And if a baby is conceived in August when the woman is 22, she will give birth to a boy. The most unusual thing associated with the Chinese Gender Chart is that it is the women who determine the sex of the children; this differs from all medical books that tell you that it is the presence or absence of the Y chromosome from men that determine the sex of the children. Recent medical studies have found that it is the woman’s ovum membrane that chooses whether to fertilize with the X or Y sperm from men. So it is more appropriate to say that it is the female that chooses the sex of the baby (by virtue of selecting which sperm to mate with) and the male only determines the sex of the baby after conception. And this is exactly what the ancient Chinese pointed out.

There are many advantages to using the Chinese Gender Chart: It is 100% free, 100% natural, and it is absolutely safe. But a lot of people who have tested the Chinese Gender Chart conclude that the accuracy of the chart is no better than flipping a coin. What they don’t know is that, to use the Chart, one must follow several rules:

1. The Chinese Gender Chart is based on the lunar calendar.

2. A newborn baby is already one-year old.

3. You don’t choose the first and last ten days of a gender period for conception.

4. You don’t choose to conceive in Chinese leap months.

There is nothing wrong in preferring a baby boy after having two or three girls. You may also consider choosing a specific gender if your family has certain sex-related illnesses. Although there is still no scientific proof of why the chart works, choosing a specific sex by using the Chinese Gender Chart is still the best alternative to more expensive gender selection methods like MicroSort and PGD.

Umpire Darrell Hair offers to quit ICC elite panel for $500,000

Saturday, August 26, 2006

The International Cricket Council announced on Friday that controversial Australian umpire Darrell Hair has offered to resign from the ICC Elite Umpires Panel with effect from 31st August if he is paid a sum U.S $500,000 to do so. Hair is currently involved in a dispute with the Pakistan side after he penalised them for ball-tampering during their Test against England at the Oval. The Pakistan team subsequently refused to come out of the pavilion, resulting in their forfeiting the match to the home side. The issue soon snowballed and both the Pakistani captain Inzamam-ul-Haq and Hair came under criticism, the former for bringing the sport into disrepute and the umpire for his alleged bias against players from the Subcontinent.

The ICC’s chief executive Malcolm Speed told a press conference that copies of Hair’s letter had been forwarded to both Doug Cowie (the Council’s umpire manager) and the Pakistan Cricket Board. The umpire asks, in his letter, for “a one-off payment to compensate for the loss of future earnings and retainer payments over the next four years, which I believe would have been the best years I have to offer ICC and world umpiring.” Speed, however, said that neither he nor David Richardson (the ICC’s General Manager) believed that the episode was motivated by any “dishonest, underhand or malicious intent.” on Darrell’s part. He also expressed surprise at the contents of the letter and that he felt the issue had been “marked by a series of unfortunate and entirely avoidable overreactions.”.

New Jersey to consider bikini waxing ban

Friday, March 20, 2009

New Jersey is considering a state-wide ban on Brazilian waxes, the removal of hair from the bikini area.

Although genital waxing has never really been allowed in the state, the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling plans to propose a ban with more specific legal wording, in response to two women who reported being injured during a wax. The board will consider the proposal at their next meeting on April 14.

If the measure passes, New Jersey may become the only US state to ban the practice outright.

Although millions of Americans engage in bikini waxes, which generally cost between $50 and $60 per session, the practice comes with risks. Skin care experts say the hot wax can irritate delicate skin in the bikini area, and result in infections, ingrown hairs and rashes.

Waxing on the face, neck, abdomen, legs and arms would continue to be permitted in the state under the proposed ban. Although New Jersey statutes have always banned bikini waxing, the laws were unclear and seldom enforced.

As a result, many salons from around the state have offered bikini waxing for years. Many salon owners spoke out against the proposed ban, which they said would severely damage their business.

“I really don’t know if the state can stop it at this point,” said Valentia Chistova, owner of the Monmouth County salon Brazil. “I know a lot of women who are really hooked.”

Sony plans global replacement of laptop batteries

Friday, September 29, 2006

After several laptop producers recalled a total of about 7 million products containing Sony batteries, the Sony Corporation said it will “initiate a global replacement program… in order to address concern related to recent over-heating incidents.”

Sony previously admitted the recalls announced by Apple and Dell would cost up to 30 billion yen, which is a quarter of Sony’s profits in 2005. Several news sources expect this to reflect badly on the company, as it adds to problems with the PlayStation 3 and Blu-Ray DVD. Since Dell announced recalls in August, Sony’s stock has lost almost 9% of its value.

Keeping up with competitors like Apple and Dell, Toshiba and Lenovo have started recalling laptops with the lithium ion batteries. Dell expanded its program to include about 4.2 million portables. Following Sony’s statement, Fujitsu too declared it would replace the batteries involved. A spokesperson for Toshiba added that the company doesn’t expect there to be any problems with personal computers, but it will replace their Sony batteries anyway, over customer concerns. However, the company doesn’t expect to pick up the tab for it.

A Lenovo laptop with the problem battery caught fire in Los Angeles Airport earlier this month. Consequently, Virgin Atlantic added them to a blacklist of prohibited laptops on their flights. According to Sony, microscopic metal particles are to blame for overheating and potentially catching fire “under certain rare conditions”.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advised ThinkPad users who want to continue using their portable to switch it off, remove the battery and continue with the AC adapter and power cord.

For money conscious buyers, you will find that Gateway laptops fall comfortably in the middle to middle high ranges as far as pricing goes. Apple users criticize lack of FireWire port on MacBook

Friday, October 17, 2008

Users of Apple Computer’s MacBook computers have criticized Apple for failing to include a FireWire port in its newest release of its basic laptop. The users expressed the anger at the popular company with hundreds of messages posted on Apple’s official forum, in the minutes after the announcement to remove the FireWire port was made by Steve Jobs.

Russ Tolman was one of the first people to complain about the issue. “I work in a large school district that doesn’t like Macs. One thing that has allowed us to keep them has been the ability to image them with firewire ports,” he stated. “In my unknowledgeable opinion Apple really screwed up with no Firewire port. Schools without much money will be moving to cheap PC’s.”

Apple’s MacBook Pro computers will continue to have a FireWire port, although cost significantly more than the MacBook.

Apple responded to these criticisms in a statement by saying that “Actually, all of the new HD camcorders of the past few years use USB 2.” While camcorders are a popular FireWire peripheral, FireWire is used for a variety of other devices.

Apple’s press release did not mention the fact the FireWire was removed from the MacBook, although it did mention that the MacBook Pro has one FireWire port.

The MacBook Pro costs US$ 1,999, while the standard MacBook costs $1,299.

Virginians melee at used Apple iBook sale

Thursday, August 18, 2005

“Total chaos” is how many described the melee that resulted from a sale of used Apple iBook laptop computers at the Richmond International Raceway (RIR) by the Henrico County, Virginia school system.

Officials estimated nearly 5,000 people thronged the sale for the $50, four-year-old computers. Among them were 17 injured, four requiring hospitalization – one for a leg injury, and three for heat-related illness, said Henrico County Police. Reports of trampling in the stampede were not uncommon, and one driver reportedly tried to drive through the throng of prospective buyers.

Alice Jemerson, an elderly customer said, “They bum rushed the gates and I was knocked over, fighting for my life. All these people were on top of me.”

Shortly after 7am EST officials opened the gates and many residents ran hysterically toward the building where the sale was to occur at 9am.

At a post sale press conference, Henrico County Police spokesman Lieutenant Doug Perry told reporters, “A few bad apples found their way inside. It looked worse than it was.”

Apple iBooks are the preferred computer for Henrico County schools, and Director of General Services of Henrico County Paul Proto, said changes were made to the event after tremendous interest was generated, some as far away as Europe and California. Officials closed and moved the sale from the Henrico county school warehouse to the RIR, after residents complained that their tax dollars were used to buy the computers, and they ought to have first right to repurchase them. The Henrico County Board of Supervisors voted to amend the County Code so that only residents could purchase the laptop computers.

Although officials had prohibited camping out and overnight parking, some in attendance reported that people began arriving at midnight.

Henrico Police Chief H.W. Stanley, Jr. said five patrol officers were originally planned for the event, a customary presence for an event the size authorities had estimated. But by 6 am, an enormous crowd was assembled at the front gate.

Officials present before opening told the crowd that automobiles would be allowed to enter first, which prompted many to run to their cars. But while some were running back to their cars, others rushed the gate. The resulting confusion created much anger, and guards closed the gates shortly thereafter.

Long lines encircling the sale building were commonplace, and one observer noted, “They’re going to see themselves on the news tonight, and see what fools they are.”

Some citizens, however, considered their wait worthwhile. Hairstylist and mother of two Sheress Blunt was one of the first hundred to buy one of the iBooks; she came with her mother and said they sneaked into the raceway through a side gate.

Tonya Vaughan arrived at 5:30 a.m., also bought one of the first iBooks and said three people offered to buy it from her for as much as $200. She declined however, saying, “I told them no way! I had worked too hard for it.”

Lt. Perry said many officers were complimented on the way they handled the crowd, adding that police were seen letting children who had been pushed aside, into the building.

Mr. Proto said, “There are no plans right now to have another iBook sale.”

Henrico County Battalion Police Chief Steve Wood said no arrests were made and the iBooks were sold out by 1pm EST.

That would be the end of a tight week full of classes, but the children are busy at yoga class, while the kindergarten is busy with clay modeling. None of the children seem to want to leave the school premises and yet, these were the very children who came in crying not willing to leave their parents or home, would now much rather not go home.

That’s because Happy school though catering to the nursery and primary classes has an all time fun and frolic ambience without the somber middle and senior school. Infact, the co curricular activities like dance and music are an integral part of the school curriculum. The primary aim of the school is to develop to the fullest, the finest qualities in the child. The school imparts education in both English and Hindi medium and in the process strives hard to give quality education to its students.
