Get Your Boat Ready For The Off Season}

Get Your Boat Ready For The Off-Season

by

Victor Epand

The first step in getting ready is to make a checklist of all the things that need to be accomplished. An owner’s manual is a great place to start, as it will spell out any recommendations on winterization. You may want to look into hiring a professional to do the necessary work for you, if you are not experienced in doing it on your own. If you are up for the challenge of performing the work yourself, the guidelines here may help you. There is also an abundance of information on the internet that can help you get the desired result.

The Inboard Engine should be run to warm up. Once the engine is warm, this is the time to change the oil, as it helps to rid the engine of impurities along with the draining oil. While inside the engine, it is the time to change the oil filter and also flush the engine with fresh water. Also circulate antifreeze through the manifold. Start the engine to allow the antifreeze to circulate through until water comes from the exhaust. Depending on whether you have a “Raw Water” or an “Enclosed Fresh Water” cooling system, this process may fluctuate. While in there, change the transmission fluid, remove spark plugs and use “fogging oil’ to spray each cylinder. Wipe the engine down with a towel sprayed lightly with fogging oil or WD-40.

The Outboard Engine should be flushed with fresh water. Allow water to completely drain out. Wash the engine down with soapy water and rinse well. Disconnect the fuel hose and let engine run until it stops. A step by step process is important, as it ensures that all fuel is drained, preventing build-up of deposits from evaporated fuel. Spray cylinders with fogging oil to lubricate. Apply water resistant grease to propeller shaft and threads. Change gear oil in lower unit and lightly lubricate the engines exterior with a good wax.

The Stern Drive should be inspected. Remove any plant life or barnacles. Gear case should be drained and checked for moisture in the oil, as this indicates leaking seals that need repairing. Clean lower unit with soapy water. If stern has a rubber boot, check for cracks. All fittings should be greased. All fluid levels should be checked, to include those in the hydraulic steering and lift pumps. Remember to check for manufacturer recommendations in your owner’s manual.

Fuel needs to be added to the fuel tank to avoid build up of condensation during the off season. A fuel stabilizer should be added following product instructions. Change the fuel filter and water separators.

Senior Living: Easing The Transition}

Many senior citizens freely admit that they fear growing older more than they fear death. The prospect of becoming increasingly frail and dependent in a society which worships strength and self-reliance, and of losing family and lifetime friends can understandably make the specter of old age a frightening one.

Does senior living have to be a time of physical failing and emotional loss? Of course aging brings physical deterioration, and time brings the loss of loved ones, but senior living can still bring growth and new awareness. Those who are emotionally, financially, and socially ready to take on the challenges of aging are the ones for whom senior living can actually bring happiness.

Involving YOur Family

Many persons, especially parents, find that their own families are in denial about the fact that they are growing older. This denial is counterproductive, and if you are in that situation, you have the right to confront your loved ones with the fact that you need to make plans for your later years. They may resist you at first, so try to make as many preparations as you can with the assistance of your local AARP chapter or community services for the aging. Your family will eventually come around.

When they do, youll be glad for the companionship and support they can add during your senior living experience. By keeping your lines of communication with them open, youll avoid misunderstandings about such critical issues as your wishes on heroic measures to sustain your life, and the final disposition of your assets. Youll experience much more peace knowing that these topics have been discussed and understood, and that your wishes concerning them will be honored.

There are many aspects of senior living which will require input from your family; where you will live; who will manage you finances should you become unable to; and who will be responsible for seeing that you get proper medical care an transportation if you need it. If you are going to live with on child, clarify what you expect of the other children so that there is no resentment from the child with whom you live, who may feel overwhelmed. For more info see

The quality of your senior living will depend to a very great degree on the communicating you do with your family ahead of time. Making sure in advance that your housing, finances, medical, and social needs will be met will not only relieve you of a tremendous burden; it will bring you and your family closer together so that your years of senior living will be as carefree and rewarding for both you and you family as you can possibly hope.

An honest, loving conversation with your family about your fears on growing older will be the first step to providing you with the great senior living you deserve!

Scottish annual drug deaths coming down from record levels

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

New figures from the Registrar General for Scotland show 2010 saw 485 drug-linked deaths, down 11% from 545 in 2009. Although the third-highest number recorded, the highest and second-highest levels were in 2008 and 2009 respectively. 2008’s record was 574 deaths.

Over 50% of drug-connected deaths last year involved heroin or morphine. 174 were linked to heroin substitute methadone, benzodiazepines to 154, alcohol to 127, cocaine to 33 and amphetamines to three. Nobody was killed by ecstacy. One in four involved a woman, with 33% of the dead aged between 25 and 34.

“These figures represent 485 lives lost to families and communities across Scotland and while I welcome the news of a further decrease, any death is one too many,” according to Community Safety Minister Roseanna Cunningham. The Scottish Government says the drop means efforts to curb drug fatalities are making progress, with the introduction of opiate poisoning remedy naloxone being credited.

Naloxone kits and training are being given to communities and the the prison service. The government is spending £28.6 million tackling drug use.

Though the national levels have dropped, some areas have a different story. Lanarkshire, Lothian, and Ayrshire and Arran saw increased numbers. Scottish Drugs Forum director noted “If you look at the rate of drug-related deaths among the drug using population, Scotland has similar rates to our European neighbours. But if you look at the rate of drug-related deaths compared to the overall population, Scottish people are seven times more likely to die from a drug-related death than their European counterparts.”

Critics claim the figures should include deaths from hepatitis C contracted as a result of drug use.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.Thursday, September 15, 2005

Enrollment dates for many schools have passed, and will be indicated next to the school’s entry under the by-state list. Update will take place in the next few days.Tuesday, September 6, 2005

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

How to Read Music for the Guitar

by

Tomas Michaud

Learning guitar by reading music has many advantages: the ability to read music provides a lot of information that you can usually only get when you spend time with a more proficient musician who is willing to show or explain techniques to you. Music takes time; muscle memory and neurological pathways must be developed over thousands of hours of practice. While teachers and professional musicians can be very helpful, learning to read music makes you independently able to study and learn new material yourself. When you have a grasp of the chords and melodies, then your teacher can help you refine your knowledge and show you the right techniques in a targeted way during your lessons.

In the old days, especially with folk music, notation was unnecessary and most musicians learned by copying a master. But in those times the master musician took on a few apprentices and spent thousands of hours with them personally developing their techniques and styles. There simply isnt time for that any more in the modern world, so prejudice against reading music is unfounded! Reading music for the guitar can help you immensely in your own independent study.

Types of guitar notation tabs vs. note reading

There are many advantages to reading tabs, but learning note reading guitar skills can give you a wealth of information that tabs cant deliver. A composer can use musical notation to transmit pitch, time signatures, alternate notes, volume, picking styles and harmonics, just to name a few. The ability to read music in the bass, treble and even the rarer clefs (soprano, alto, tenor, etc.) can open up a wide variety of new techniques and understanding. Learning to read notes can let you communicate effectively and in an efficient manner with other musicians and will also provide you with a good foundation for reading classical or other styles of music which might require more reading. If you ever want to audition for a band, then you will also need to have your sight reading skills perfected in addition to your techniques, improvisation and so on. Take a look at the tests Dream Theater forces their musicians through when they are auditioning for new members in the documentary The Spirit Carries On. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L609JsPFmmI&ob=av3e)

Beginner ideas

The first thing you should do is find a book that has progressive exercises in learning guitar notation. Ask your teacher where to get one, check on the Internet or consult with the staff at your local guitar or music shop. You can even get free sight reading guitar books online. Its best to get a couple of books, as you will find that after doing the exercises a few times you may end up memorizing them and playing from heart. If you find yourself doing this, you need to move onto another exercise, because playing from memory wont help you develop your sight reading abilities.Work your way through the exercises starting with the sections on basic sight reading for the guitar. If you run out of exercises in one book, switch to the other one to do new exercises to practice sight reading at the beginner level until you can confidently read them on the fly.

Beginning sight reading the guitar is best done by learning the notes on the 1st and 2nd string in the first position of the guitar using quarter notes. Make sure you are doing exercises that let you practice these. Songs like Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Frere Jacques are often used in these exercises because they have you practicing only a few notes per scale.

You will usually start off your beginner sight reading exercises by playing songs with quarter notes.

Intermediate guitar notation

As you progress through your sight reading books, you will be slowly adding the other strings on the guitar as well as changing the note duration (half notes, eighth notes, etc.)

Eventually, you will start doing technical exercises such as arpeggios, thirds, scales, rhythms and riffs. These are small blocks of melodies that can be practiced by drilling and adding to your routine. Practicing these over and over once you can sight-read will help you develop your techniques in dexterity, picking, strumming, holding down chords and playing melodies with both your hands (especially with electric guitars, both hands are often used to play complicated solos which would be technically impossible with one hand).

Advanced guitar notation

By this stage, you should have a solid foundation of being able to read any note or note duration by sight. This is when complicated tonalities, pitches, durations, volumes, tapping and rests are added. This type of sight reading will teach you how to pluck the strings to produce staccatos, slurs, legatos and glissandos. You will also learn how to read the Italian used to describe the pace of the song and how to alternate quickly between complicated time signatures.

Tips & tricks to remember

– STOP if you are memorizing the exercise; move onto the next one

– SPEND regular time practicing sight reading; even a few 15 minute sessions per week that you can integrate into your regular practice sessions will be extremely beneficial

– GET RID OF distractions; not everyone can afford a sound-proof room, but you can use one for a small fee usually at your local music school or sound studio or even just lock yourself into a small room; remember to treat your practice time almost with a religious fervor and instruct the rest of your family/roommates not to disturb you when you are practicing; doing this will greatly increase your ability to concentrate on reading instead of worrying about getting your fingers in the right place; and theyll realize you were right when youre playing like anyone on this list! http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-greatest-guitarists-of-all-time-19691231
