Australian researchers confirm stress makes you sick

Wednesday, December 7, 2005

Australian researchers say they have scientifically proven that stress causes sickness. The Garvan Institute in Sydney has discovered that a hormone, known as neuropeptide Y, (NPY) is released into the body during times of stress. Their findings show the hormone can stop the immune system from functioning properly.

Neuropeptide Y is one of those hormones that gets unregulated or released from neurones when stressful situations occur…it’s known for example that it regulates blood pressure and heart rates so your heart rate goes up but it hasn’t been known that it actually can affect immune cells as well,” said Professor Herbert Herzog, one of the researchers.

Herzog feels it is good to finally have proof of something people have suspected for so long.

“Now we have proven without doubt that there is a direct link and that stress can weaken the immune system and that makes you more vulnerable when you for example have a cold or flu and even in the more serious situations such as cancer can be enhanced in these situations,” said Herzog.

The Garvan Institute study centres on two key events that enable the human body to recognise foreign substances and control invaders. When our body encounters a pathogen (bacteria and viruses), the immune cells retain and interrogate suspects. Their activation is made possible by NPY. These cells then return to the lymph nodes, which are found all over the body, with information about the foreign invaders. The lymph nodes are where decisions about defence are made.

“Most of us expect to come down with a cold or other illness when we are under pressure, but until now we have mostly had circumstantial evidence for a link between the brain and the immune system,” said lead Garvan researcher, associate Professor Fabienne Mackay. “During periods of stress, nerves release a lot of NPY and it gets into the bloodstream, where it directly impacts on the cells in the immune system that look out for and destroy pathogens (bacteria and viruses) in the body.”

In the case of bacteria and viruses, TH1 cells are part of the attack team that is sent out on the ‘search and destroy’ mission. But when their job is done they need to be turned ‘off’ and the immune system reset. The same hormone, NPY, that activates the sentry cells now prompts the TH1 cells to slow down and die.

“Under normal conditions, circulating immune cells produce small amounts of NPY, which enables the immune cells on sentry duty and the TH1 immune cells to operate – it’s a yin and yang kind of situation. But too much NPY means that the TH1 attack is prevented despite the foreign invaders being identified – and this is what happens during stress,” added McKay.

The impact of stress on the body has been observed in athletes. Ph. D researcher at the University of Queensland, Luke Spence, together with the Australian Institute of Sport, studied elite and recreational athletes over five months.

They found elite athletes were more susceptible to respiratory diseases under stress.

“A lot of elite athletes put themselves through vast amounts of physical stress in their training, but also their emotional, psychological stress of feeling the pressure of Australia on their shoulders, wanting to compete and wanting to do their best,” said Spence.

It’s not just athletes who are prone to stress. Pressures at work and at home may cause emotional and mental stress that can be equally damaging. Almost a third of all work absenteeism in Australia is due to illness, costing employers over $10 billion a year.

“I think it has a huge impact for the work force and also for employers – if their employees are constantly stressed, constantly under pressure, they are more likely to get sick,” Spence said.

Further research could lead to the development of new drugs which may inhibit the action of the neuropeptide Y hormone.

Herzog warns people to minimise stress before it becomes a problem.

“Relaxation methods like yoga will help you to prevent that but there will still be people out there that are not responding to that and treatment by interfering with the system will be important,” he said. “There’s obviously some time until such a treatment will be available but this is something we will definitely work towards.”

The Garvan research will be published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Volume 202, No. 11.

Wedding Rings For Men: 27 Key Facts You Must Know Before Purchasing

by

Marc choytWedding Rings For Men: 27 Key Facts You Must Know Before Purchasing:

Youll probably agree, that if youre looking for wedding rings for men, and you dont know all that much about jewelry, it may be hard to find the information you need all in one place. Consider the issue of all the various styles. A mans wedding ring may be the only piece of jewelry he wears. Should it be a classic and simple wedding bands for men that his father and grandfather wore, or something with a more modern design or even venturing into something with some panache? Style, metal choices, width, durability, and the cost of the ring are all important factors. Also, these days, with conflict metals, ethics should also be a basic consideration.

The good news is if youre looking for information on wedding rings for men, this is very likely the most comprehensive article youll be able to find. (I like to be thorough, very thorough.) Youll get the basics and the real story, and the information you can use right now in order to make an informed purchase. Best of all, youll learn key facts about wedding rings for men that few other jewelers would reveal.

Well start with the most basic question first: What Makes A Mens Wedding Ring A Mans Wedding Ring?

The simple answer to this question is, if you are a man and you like the ring, then it is a mans wedding ring. The consideration men often have is, is the ring too feminine or not masculine enough? This is totally a personal preference. For example, while some men might consider this two tone wedding rings too feminine, weve sold this design to men over and over again. Yet, jewelers do break out collections of wedding rings, designating some as mens rings and some as womens rings. In the case of gender, the sort is usually based upon two criteria: width and style.

The Width of Wedding Rings For Men

Mens wedding bands are most often wider than wedding rings for women. Since men generally have larger hands, proportionally men want larger rings. Mens wedding rings also tend to be heavier, wider and sometimes even chunkier. In context to width, a mens wedding band generally ranges from 5mm to 8mm wide. Typically, men do not choose under 5mm for their wedding rings with perhaps the exception of classic comfort fit wedding bands. Men do not go much over 8mm width even if they have large hands. This perimeter is not iron clad of course, but rather based upon what Ive noticed selling rings to men over the past twenty plus years.

However, there are additional outlier considerations.

Mens Engagement Rings?

With gender equality, both men and women are proposing to men and why not? Engagement is an important cultural tradition and an essential bridge to the lifelong commitment. Mens engagement rings are a beautiful reminder of a mans commitment that he can show and celebrate with his greater community. One survey revealed that 71% of men would be open to wearing an engagement ring. But, if you are going to be wearing a wedding and engagement ring together, like in bridal ring sets, then consider the width, and how it will feel to wear the two rings at the same time.

The Bottom Line:

The Width of Wedding Rings for Men The most importing thing to consider in context to width is what you are most comfortable with. But, the width of the ring impacts the style, design or motifs of the ring because the wider the surface of the ring, the more room there is for actual design, which brings us to our second criteria for mens wedding rings.

MENS WEDDING RINGS STYLES

What Are The Various Styles of Mens Wedding Rings?

Wedding rings are deeply personal in what they represent. They are an outward sign of deep commitment to oneself, one partner and ones community. Also, all wedding rings have innate symbolism. Their circular shape represents wholeness, community and unity. Style is a way in which a man can express something unique about his own individuality and partnership simultaneously. The number of different styles for mens rings is almost infinite, but we will simplify it here by breaking it down into two broad categories: classic and designer.

The Classic Mens Wedding Ring

For some, the wedding ring decision is easy: a classic wedding band. Chances are that your parents and grandparents wore one of the more traditional and simple wedding bands. The vast majority of men choose to go with this time-tested style because of its simplicity, elegance and ageless traditional appearance. But even within this perimeter, there are many, many variations. The top of a ring can be domed, or rounded off, as shown here. Or edges can be flat and straight, like here. Also, the inside of rings can be made comfort fit, which means that the interior of the ring is rounded off or curved, instead of flat. Basically, the convex metal and wider edges make the ring more comfortable to wear.

Designer Mens Wedding Rings

Every mans wedding band holds intention as a physical representation of ceremonial commitments. And it can also, in its very design, be an object of great craftsmanship and inspiration. As for what that design may be, your imagination is the only limit, but here are just a few examples. The imagery in a mans wedding ring can be inspired by a beloved painting that represents mystery of the evening sky, such as our starry night collection. Mens wedding rings can also reinforce and preserve spiritual, religious or cultural connections in a variety of ways. For example, in the Celtic Arches ring, each line within the motif represents a life path coming together. The strands of the knot arch up to the heavens and down to the earth, gathering energy and inspiration from both.

ButWhat Wedding Ring Does Your Partner Want?

There are no rules of matching or not matching you and your partners wedding bands. You dont have to match, but many couples do prefer to. Whats fun is that you dont have to match exactly, but you can choose to match through metal choice, style, gemstones, motif or any other various ways. Many wedding rings are part of larger collections with varied widths, from narrow to wide, such as is the case of the many styles of our river ring collection or the Wind and Waves collection. Even if you do not find an exact match, many jewelers can do variations through a custom design process, which we are particularly fond of, experienced with and have lots of fun with. The particular designer wedding rings you both choose can be deeply talismanic, intimately revealing and a reminder of what is held sacred in your partnership.

METAL CHOICES FOR WEDDING RINGS FOR MEN

Whats The Best Metal For A Mens Wedding Ring?

Are you someone who prefers the cool tones of platinum wedding rings or the warm radiance of 18K yellow gold wedding rings? Metal and style are intimately connected to the aesthetics of your ring. The choice of what metal you opt for in your wedding ring is actually a topic of considerable complexity. What follows now is some essential information that will help you make your choice, starting with Gold Wedding Rings 101.

14 or 18 Karat or Caret Wedding Rings?

The word, karat, derives from the word, caret. Caret first came to use in Greek-Roman society as a unit of weight related carob seeds, which are surprisingly similar. We now measure precious gems in carats, while karats reference the percentage of gold in wedding rings. Carat is used in the measurement of precious stones. Twenty-four karat gold (24K) is pure gold, or as jewelers call it, 3 nines, meaning .999% gold pure. But pure gold is about as hard as your fingernails. It wouldnt hold up well in wedding rings. Alloys are added for three purposes: to make the gold harder, more suitable to jewelry fabrication, and in order to change the color of the gold.

Advantages of a 14K Yellow Gold Mens Wedding Ring

There are two main advantages of 14K gold rings over 18K gold rings. The first is that the price will be about 25% less expensive because there is less gold in the ring.

The second is that a 14K gold mens ring is harder and more durable than the 18K gold mens ring.

OUR VIEW:

In the case of 14K vs. 18K, unless you do abrasive activity with your hands, we recommend choosing an 18K mens wedding band. If you love the natural color of gold, the radiant warmth of 18K yellow is also an excellent choice because it has a very exquisite color and feeling tone.

The additional price is worth it for a lifetime investment.

However, if you are looking at mens white gold wedding bands, we recommend purchasing 14K, because with more alloy, the color is whiter, the ring more durable and its less expensive. This leads into next issue, which is consideration of white metal wedding rings. If white metals are not something youre considering, skip down to point 19 in this article.

Fairtrade Gold Mens Wedding Rings: The Most Ethical Option

The Fairtrade gold certification is an independently audited set of standards and principal benchmarks created by Fairtrade International in collaboration with miners and jewelers.

The entire program is based upon transparent and traceable supply chains.

The result is that artisanal small-scale miners are empowered to improve their livelihoods. Retailers and consumers are given assurances that the miners are fairly compensated for their efforts, and that the environments, including watersheds, around the mines are not contaminated with mercury or cyanide.

As the first Fairtrade gold jeweler in the US, we are able to offer an extensive collection of Fairtrade mens wedding rings through our notable Valerio brand.

Just has Fairtrade coffee and chocolates have made a huge difference in the global south, Fairtrade gold can have a revolutionary impact not only within the jewelry world, but also outside of it as well.

Heres why:

In purchasing a Fairtrade wedding ring, youll be part of the global movement that reduces poverty and environmental contamination while empowering small-scale miners to live their lives free of poverty and exploitation, just like the Peruvian miners shown above, so they can move beyond merely surviving and into flourishing opportunity-filled lives.

Final Thoughts

About Mens Wedding Rings The tradition of wearing wedding rings is six thousand years old; back when rings were made from braided reeds of grass, or help was exchanged, to represent the ever-lasting love of the couple. The finger on the left hand isnt randomly chosen; the left handed ring finger, according to the ancient Egyptians, houses the Vena amoris, the vein of love which connects directly to the heart. There are so many different considerations when purchasing wedding rings, but there is no right or wrong decision. Like the ancient Egyptians and all the fulfilled married couples since then, it is all about connection with the heart. Choosing a wedding ring is just an expression of that first step of a heartfelt commitment that will confidently last the rest of your lives. Whats most important is what feels right for the both of you.

Audience in Ireland watches circus acrobat fall to his death

Wednesday, August 30, 2006

A Russian trapeze artist, Vitaly Kharapavitski, 26, performing at a circus in Scariff, Ireland has died after a cage attached to a hot air balloon crushed the performer. His wife, Sasha, 24, who was also performing at the time, was injured, breaking her arm. Both were dressed in clown suits.

At least 100 people were attending the circus and watched the acrobat fall. Most of the attendees were children.

According to witnesses, the balloon caught fire and the cage fell on top of the acrobat, crushing his head.

Spectators of the circus were asked to leave the area while the incident was being investigated. Tony Kenneally, a Garda Superintendent said that the incident is being treated as an accident.

“We had to discharge the audience because we knew it was quite serious,” said spokespeople for the Royal Russian Circus.

Some of the attendees thought the fall was part of the performance.

Indian banks propose to use gold deposits as CRR/SLR

Monday, June 30, 2014

State Bank of India (SBI) and Bank of Baroda (BoB), two of the largest public sector banks of India, proposed on Saturday their gold deposits should be allowed to count toward their state-mandated cash reserve ratio (CRR) or statutory liquidity ratio (SLR).

Arundhati Bhattacharya, the chairperson of SBI, made the proposal at a Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council event held in Mumbai on Saturday. She said the need for gold deposits to become more liquid has increased because gold import is putting a strain on the country’s current account deficit. S. S. Mundra, Chairperson and managing director of BoB, agreed and said it would help bringing gold into the more productive sectors of the economy.

Bhattacharya added SBI has no longer any incentive to run its gold deposit scheme as it cannot fully deploy the assets, noting SBI is the party most involved with gold deposits in India. G. S. Sandhu, Union financial services secretary, also at the event, responded that the government is looking for ways to monetize the gold held by the public, as import of gold can strain the current account deficit and foreign exchange reserves.

Currently, the Reserve Bank of India has set the CRR at 4% and the SLR at 22.5%. SLR is the portion of deposits that must be invested in recognized safe securities and assets.

Canadian news doesn’t interest Prime Minister, prefers to watch American

Saturday, October 24, 2009

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper caused controversy this week after telling Toronto business leaders that he prefers to watch American news programmes instead of Canadian.

On Wednesday, he told the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Convention that he watched “mainly American news” and suggested it was his hobby “to watch politics elsewhere”. The Toronto Star says his “words ring true” in light of the interviews he’s given to American broadcasters like Fox News and CNN.

Three of Harper’s cabinet members, Jim Flaherty, Peter Kent and Tony Clement, questioned the veracity of his statement, stating they “assume” he must digest some Canadian news issues. But Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said “I think the prime minister is too busy to sit there being vainglorious and watching himself on TV.”

…if he actually likes Fox News better than Canadian news, then Canadians ought to be concerned.

Political opponents were quick to draw attention to the admission by the Prime Minister, whom they claim has always had American interests at heart during his career.

The Star quoted NDP leader Jack Layton, stating “Perhaps if he watched Canadian news more often, he would understand the negative impact of his policies on Canadian families. And if he actually likes Fox News better than Canadian news, then Canadians ought to be concerned”.

Liberal Bob Rae likewise pointed out that politicians “all have an obligation to know what’s going on”, and noted he found the admission “quite shocking”.

A statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office clarified that Harper watched hockey on national networks, but took his news from American networks.

The Concept Behind The Personalized Promotional Items}

Submitted by: Kellie Purden

Personalization uses technology to customize something for an individual, a group or an organization. It provides a domain of influence and unrestricted control for the user. In the workplace, it saves time by allowing someone to disregard repetitive tasks. Personalization also allows service parts that the user doesnt need to be discarded. Personalization often offers low-cost solutions to meet the specifications of the user. Some of the examples of things that can be personalized are web pages, mobile phones, search engines and promotional items.

Yes, personalization is now used heavily in marketing; promotional merchandise is often personalized. With the birth of digital printing, personalized promotional items are made possible.

Apparel is one of the more common personalized promotional items. T-shirts, jackets, and even pants are some of the items which can be personalized. These items are usually printed with the organizations logo or name. In some cases, even the individuals name is printed on the apparel.

Clocks and watches can also be personalized promotional items. There are certain types of clocks and watches that be disassembled so that a companys name or logo can be printed on the clocks or watchs face. Even an individuals picture or name can printed on clocks and watches.

Caps and hats are also ordinarily used as personalized promotional items. An organizations logo or name is embroidered or printed in front of the cap or hat. Even an individuals name can be placed on the cap or hat.

Mugs and drink ware are also possible personalized promotional items. A companys logo, name and contact details can be printed on the mug or drink ware. Pictures can also be printed for a more personalized effect.

Other items that can be personalized are mouse pads; pens and other writing instruments; home and house ware items; folios, notebooks and other paper products; business and office supplies; bags, backpacks and tote bags; computer supplies; and travel and luggage supplies.

Promotional items can be a good marketing tool for the business. Planning is essential for this type of marketing. It is best to make a profile first of the target audience so that the right promotional item can be ordered. Also, one has to take into consideration the occasion when the promotional items will be distributed to the intended recipients. The size of the logo and company name should also be considered. The imprint area should be able to accommodate the logo and/or company name.

Promotional items also must be relevant to the core business. The target audience must be able to connect the promotional item with the company. High quality items even though small is much better than big promotional items but of low quality. Poor quality promotional items will convey poor quality products and services of the company. Also, promotional items should fit the budget. Prior to ordering these items, a budget must be planned and strictly adhered to.

With the onset of personalization in almost anything, more and more individuals, groups and companies are joining the bandwagon because it gives them the distinction from the others.

Get Your Boat Ready For The Off Season}

Get Your Boat Ready For The Off-Season

by

Victor Epand

The first step in getting ready is to make a checklist of all the things that need to be accomplished. An owner’s manual is a great place to start, as it will spell out any recommendations on winterization. You may want to look into hiring a professional to do the necessary work for you, if you are not experienced in doing it on your own. If you are up for the challenge of performing the work yourself, the guidelines here may help you. There is also an abundance of information on the internet that can help you get the desired result.

The Inboard Engine should be run to warm up. Once the engine is warm, this is the time to change the oil, as it helps to rid the engine of impurities along with the draining oil. While inside the engine, it is the time to change the oil filter and also flush the engine with fresh water. Also circulate antifreeze through the manifold. Start the engine to allow the antifreeze to circulate through until water comes from the exhaust. Depending on whether you have a “Raw Water” or an “Enclosed Fresh Water” cooling system, this process may fluctuate. While in there, change the transmission fluid, remove spark plugs and use “fogging oil’ to spray each cylinder. Wipe the engine down with a towel sprayed lightly with fogging oil or WD-40.

The Outboard Engine should be flushed with fresh water. Allow water to completely drain out. Wash the engine down with soapy water and rinse well. Disconnect the fuel hose and let engine run until it stops. A step by step process is important, as it ensures that all fuel is drained, preventing build-up of deposits from evaporated fuel. Spray cylinders with fogging oil to lubricate. Apply water resistant grease to propeller shaft and threads. Change gear oil in lower unit and lightly lubricate the engines exterior with a good wax.

The Stern Drive should be inspected. Remove any plant life or barnacles. Gear case should be drained and checked for moisture in the oil, as this indicates leaking seals that need repairing. Clean lower unit with soapy water. If stern has a rubber boot, check for cracks. All fittings should be greased. All fluid levels should be checked, to include those in the hydraulic steering and lift pumps. Remember to check for manufacturer recommendations in your owner’s manual.

Fuel needs to be added to the fuel tank to avoid build up of condensation during the off season. A fuel stabilizer should be added following product instructions. Change the fuel filter and water separators.
