How To Choose The Right Vinyl Siding In Connecticut

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

byAlma Abell

When ethylene and chlorine gases are mixed, they create a white powder called vinyl resin. The resin can be melted and blended with different additives to create products ranging from shower curtains to PVC pipe. Vinyl is also a popular material for siding, and today’s virgin vinyl siding’s additives make it more UV resistant than products that came before. Below, you’ll find out more about this popular type of siding, and you’ll learn how to choose the right siding for your home.

How Realistic of a Look do you Want?

Most of today’s vinyl siding is die-extruded, and panels fabricated in such a manner can be made in any length. The panels look great, but if you want deeper patterns and crisper edges, it should be molded from polypropylene vinyl. These panels are usually four feet or less in length.

What Level of Stiffness do you Need in Siding?

Unsupported or thin Vinyl Siding in Connecticut is more likely to droop or sag over time. The thinnest panels that are up to code are .035? thick; premium siding ranges from .044-.048? thick, and some makers sell .055? siding. Thicker panels are more resistant to sagging, but stiffness is dependent on other characteristics as well.

The biggest reason to get stiff siding is its wind resistance. If you live in a location prone to heavy winds and strong storms, be sure to carefully read the manufacturer’s warranty. This information will give you an idea of how wind-resistant your siding is; some panels comply with the strictest wind codes (such as Miami’s, which is 148 mph).

Moisture Resistance

Every type of vinyl siding is unique, but all have one thing in common. Contrary to popular belief, Vinyl Siding in Connecticut is less prone to moisture retention than its wooden counterparts are. The reason for this is that the panel butts have built-in weep holes. For proper contraction and expansion, vinyl siding has to be loosely hung, and air can flow freely around it.

Just as is true with a wooden siding installation, you should ask your siding contractor to install flashing, builder’s felt and/or housewrap before hanging the siding. A top-quality installation depends mostly on the quality of the workmanship; before hiring a contractor from www.vnanfito.com, be sure to ask for credentials, certifications and references from satisfied customers.

Bombing of Peshawar Pearl Continental Hotel in Pakistan kills 18

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Militants in Pakistan launched a truck bomb attack on the Peshawar Pearl Continental hotel, killing 18 and wounding at least 55. Among the dead were two foreign United Nations officials working for the World Food Programme.

According to the BBC, Fidayeen-e-Islam, a relatively obscure Pakistani militant group, claimed responsibility for the blast. The attack follows a threat from the Taliban made on May 27, warning of “major attacks” in Pakistan.

The bombing occurred despite the property being heavily guarded and secure. The militants gained entrance by overcoming the guards with gunfire, and forcing a bomb-laden truck, containing at least 500 kilograms of explosives, through the gates. Police official Liaqat Ali told the Associated Press that the militants “drove the vehicle inside the hotel gates and blew it up on reaching close to the hotel building.”

The bomb caused a 15-foot wide crater, and brought down the west wing of the hotel. An injured guest, Jawad Chaudhry, said, “The floor under my feet shook. I thought the roof was falling on me. I ran out. I saw everybody running in panic. There was blood and pieces of glass everywhere.”

The hotel is regularly used by businessmen and diplomats, and is located in a secure area of the city. Neighbours include the Peshawar High Court, Provincial Assembly and the official home of the Commander of the Frontier Corps. The perceived security of the neighbourhood makes it a candidate for the location of a planned United States consulate.

U.S. develops parks above highways

Tuesday, February 20, 2007

In big cities, finding land for new parks is less of an expedition than an all-out land-rights battle with property owners. But some cities across the U.S. have found a slightly easier way to add to their greenspace. By utilizing the state’s air rights to the space above freeways that run below at ground level, cities can acquire 5 or 10 acres of parkspace essentially for free, such Freeway Park which occupies 5.5 acres above a freeway in downtown Seattle.

Of course, this free “land” is actually nothing more than open air above a freeway, requiring cities to pay the high construction costs of capping the roadway with land.

Such projects are currently being planned in St. Louis, Cincinnati, Dallas and San Diego. A recent article in Governing Magazine looks at more than two dozen highway deck parks that have been built or are under construction in the U.S. The article finds that even though the price of constructing parks on top of freeways can rise upwards of $500 per square foot, property values and local development boom once they are completed.
