Australia: Andrea Wildin, Greens candidate in Stretton state by-election, discusses political issues with Wikinews

Saturday, July 10, 2021

After the resignation of Australian Labor Party Member of Parliament Duncan Pegg of the Queensland branch, voters in the Queensland electoral district of Stretton are to go to a by-election on July 24.

Pegg announced his resignation on April 22 to deal with a cancer diagnosis, and died on June 10. Stretton covers suburbs in south Brisbane such as Calamvale, Sunnybank Hills, Kuraby, and the eponymous town. At the 2020 Queensland state election, Pegg won 56.59% of the first preference vote in Stretton, with his closest opponent being Peter Zhuang of the Liberal National Party, who won 30.21% of the vote.

Since the seat’s establishment in 2001, it has been held by the Labor Party except for one exception in the 2012 Queensland state election, which was a victory for the Liberal National Party, who won 78 of Queensland’s 89 seats. Pegg was first elected in 2015, after defeating the Liberal National incumbent Freya Ostapovitch.

Five candidates are running in this by-election, including Andrea Wildin of the Greens. The Greens’ website describes Wildin as a former nurse and midwife, who now has been “volunteering as a disability advocate throughout the COVID-19 pandemic”, being a wheelchair user herself. Wildin previously ran for the Greens in Stretton at the previous state election, coming in third place among four candidates and winning 8.71% of the vote. Wikinews spoke to Wildin in an interview via email about issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare, and more important subjects both on a statewide and local level.

Female Dog Names: Choosing The Right Name For Your Girl Dog

By Jennifer McVey

Whether you have adopted a cute little female puppy or your new dog is a bit of an older lady, you’ll find that you need to think up a name for her. Naming your new dog is a fairly important part of making her part of your family, and you’ll discover that the more thought you put into it, the better. There are lots of great names out there, so take some time to make sure that the one that you choose is perfect.

There are a couple key things to remember when choosing a female dog name: short and sweet is better, don’t choose a name that rhymes with a typical command (like “Stay, Fay!”), and remember that the whole world will hear you call your dog’s name…so keep it clean!

First, take a look at your favorite media. You’ll find that there are a number of different ideas just in looking around at your favorite movies. Maybe you were a “Gone With The Wind” buff when you were a young girl, and your new puppy’s as sassy and bold as Scarlet, or as shy and sweet as Melanie. What about Shakespeare? While you might need to watch out if you name your new dog after someone as sinister as Titus Andronicus’s Tamora, you’ll certainly have less to worry about if your dog ends up fitting the name Ophelia, or Desdemona, which can be shortened quite adorably to Desi.

Maybe you’re someone who prefers old-fashioned names. If you prefer slightly more old fashioned names, think about something like Pearl or Lucy. Maybe you wouldn’t mind having a name with a slightly more modern sound, like Ashley, Haley or Brooklyn. Get to know your dog, and remember that even if she’s a puppy right now that she won’t be forever. Make sure that the name you choose will suit her four years old as well as it does when she’s only six months old.

When choosing your new puppy’s name, keep in mind that it should be relatively short. You’ll find that the shorter it is, the easier it will be for your dog to distinguish it from other sounds and to recognize it. Choose a name that you’ll be comfortable putting on any veterinarian’s forms or shouting out for your neighbors to hear. You’ll find that getting yourself used to the name is as important as making sure that your dog is!

There are plenty of sources out there when you are considering naming your new girl dog. If you want something a little more exotic than the normal ‘Honey’ or ‘Molly,’ why not think about place names? A particularly elegant dog might wear the name Kyoto or Dresden very well, though your dog seems a little flashier than that, you can consider Vegas! No matter what name you choose, make sure that your dog will respond to it, and that it can be said or called very easily!

US Marine Corps blame deadly Morocco Osprey plane crash on pilots

Sunday, August 19, 2012

Officials with the US Marine Corps have announced their investigation into the fatal crash of a Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey transport plane on April 11 has found pilot error was to blame. The probe found two marines died after the pilots lost control in a tailwind in Morocco.

The accident has triggered attention from Japanese media ahead of a planned deployment there, and officials at a press conference Friday were keen to stress no mechanical or structural defects were found. The pilots had opted for an unplanned 180-degree turn to avoid flying low over obstructions including people and vehicles. This move placed them into a strong tailwind.

This wind tilted the plane forward, but the pilots did not realise and began rolling the engines forward. The Osprey had been flying in helicopter mode, with the rotors pointed skywards; by pointing them forwards, it can be operated as a standard aircraft. Normal flight rules call for the aircraft being level, not tilted, when this switch is made.

These actions moved the center of gravity forward, which pitched the nose further down. Pulling on the flight column was insufficient to correct the problem, and the aircraft flew down into the ground. Two Marines in the back were killed, and both pilots were seriously injured. The investigation suggested leaving the aircraft in helicopter mode could have prevented the accident.

The wounded pilots are still recovering, and Marine Corps Aviation’s deputy commandant Lt. Gen. Robert Schmidle said that when they are well enough they will go before a panel to determine if they are fit to fly. He says their actions will be scrutinised then. Schmidle also said the model’s flight manual will be updated and training given to pilots in light of the crash.

“It’s an extraordinarily complex set of circumstances that caused this to happen”, he told reporters Friday. He called the plane a “solid, safe” model.

Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Thursday, December 18, 2008

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.

Ways To Proficiently Breed Clownfish

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

Submitted by: Bince Olear

1. Breeding Pair of Clownfish

So that you can breed this kind of fish, you will need a mated pair. The most effective way to do is to obtain a mated pair and the second way is to own two clownfish if they are still young. Young clownfish usually are males but once the dominant fish was confirmed, the dominant fish will be the female. You will be able to know it is the female because it is usually bigger than the male fish.

Once they start on breeding, they will certainly lay eggs every 12-18 days on a section of rock. Be sure to make weekly water changes for at least 10% of the overall volume of water. Trying to keep the water clean will make them almost certainly going to spawn. A good protein skimmer a very good idea to be able to decrease the regularity of changing the water. If the clownfish has tank mates, the tank should be peaceful. It s not advisable to put different species of clownfish together simply because they may possibly fight and stress out each other. Remember that anemone fish don’t lay eggs if they’re stressed. An anemone helps the clownfish feel much more comfortable in laying eggs but it’s not required. You can use rocks with plenty of hiding places so that the fish will feel more comfortable.

It s best to use timer for the lighting for your tank. A timer will get the fish in the schedule of sunlight and darkness. Feed the fish in a particular time everyday with a mixture of flakes and frozen food. Note that if ever the fish aren’t receiving proper vitamins and nutrients, they’re going to lay eggs that have a bad quality.

If the fish become acclimated and they are on the regular schedule, they are going to begin to act differently around spawning time. If the female has a thicker line in the middle of her body, the fish is pregnant. If you notice that the fish is constantly cleaning a spot on the rock with its mouth and fins, it means that the fish is cleaning the site for the eggs. The female will swim over the site for a few times until she lays the egg, then the male follows to fertilize it. The eggs are orange in color and about 3-4mm in length. The male fish will protect and guard the eggs, and also eat the damaged egg and unfertilized eggs.

2. Preparations for Clownfish

In the first day the eggs are colored orange. After a couple of days they’ll appear grey, and then finally grey with silver eyes. If the silver eyes already appeared, they’ll hatch the following night. Before the eggs hatch, you will need to prepare the following:

a. Hatchling Tank

You should raise the baby clownfish in separate aquarium to make sure they can get proper food without competition from other tank mates.

. Live Rotifers

Baby clownfish don t eat flakes and any frozen food. They simply eat live food like rotifers. You’ll need Nannochlopsis or Rotifer Diet since it is food for rotifers.

3. Hatch Night

Clownfish eggs will hatch about a week or maybe more depending on the water temperature. You should check the eggs every day and when you notice that the eggs has a silver color this means that they’ll hatch after the lights go out or during the night. You need to remove clownfish fry from the aquarium and put them in the tank you prepared and ensure that the two tanks have similar salinity and temperature before you move the eggs.

Switch off the filtration system and pump in the tank. There shouldn’t be water current or flow in the tank. When the lights are off, wait for about half hour and switch on your flashlight into the water. Don’t shine the light at the eggs mainly because it will delay the hatchling process. The clownfish will probably be attracted by the light and swim towards it then begin siphoning the clownfish fry into the bucket. Then place it in the container you prepared but make sure that the eggs won’t be exposed in the air.

Once the eggs are in breeding tank, place an air stone or airline tube towards the eggs to make sure that the eggs gets enough air to hatch properly.

4. Feeding and Care

Keeping your clownfish fry alive can be hard. Your fry tank must consistently be filled with rotifers for the baby fish to consume. You will notice if the baby fish is dying because they may have problems in swimming, you’ll see them spinning in the water column, and sometimes they’ll sink towards the bottom then suddenly will start swimming again. If you see this within your tank, your clownfish fry are starving to death. If your fish begins diving like it is dropped to the bottom and is also having a difficulty in swimming, they will usually die in 24hrs. Add rotifers as quickly as possible. You’ll able to see your fishes eating the rotifers by noticing them swimming then stop, curving their tails and darting forward. Continue to feed rotifers for about a week then try feeding them with live shrimps.

Newly hatch brine shrimps are good for your fry. When brine shrimp hatch they leave a brown egg shell. The shells will always be floating and the shrimps for the clownfish are usually in the bottom. For the first two days it is best to feed the fish with both shrimps and rotifers to ensure they are still acquiring as much vitamins as possible.

Once the clownfish fry are already eating brine shrimps, their bellies will appear orange. That is a good sign that they are getting more than enough food. Make sure that the clownfish fry don’t go without food for more than 12 hours. Make sure that you always have live foods available for your fish.

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

Space station crew perform successful spacewalk

Monday, March 28, 2005

Commander Leroy Chiao (U.S.A.) and Flight Engineer Salizhan Sharipov (Russia), suited in Russian Orlan spacesuits, left the International Space Station on a 4.5 hour long spacewalk to install antennas for the European Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), inspect and photograph other exterior equipment and launched the Nanosatellite mini-satellite. This is the last scheduled walk for the Expedition 10 crew.

At 06:25 UTC, the two astronauts left the station from the Pirs DC1 docking compartment/airlock and proceeded to install the last three of six space-to-space communication antennas for the ATV’s rendezvous and docking with the ISS next year.

Sharipov next deployed the foot long, 11 pound Russian Nanosatellite, tossing it into space by hand. The object of the experiment is to develop small satellite control techniques, monitor satellite operations and develop new attitude system sensors. Russian ground crews reported good signal reception from the satellite two hours after its release.

The two astronauts next proceeded to the aft end of the Zvezda service module. A Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna and necessary cabling for the ATV was installed and the men worked their way back to the airlock.

The station maintained its attitude, despite the loss of a gyroscope earlier in the space station mission, until the end of the spacewalk. Chiao and Sharipov reported being a safe distance from the attitude adjustment thrusters. Russian ground control activated the jets and normal attitude ofthe station was regained.

They returned to the airlock at 1055 UTC, completing the mission an hour earlier than scheduled.

Chiao and Sharipov arrived on the station October 16, 2004. They are scheduled to return to Earth on April 25, 2005. This marks Sharipov’s second walk in space and Chiao’s sixth.

Home Improvement Projects How To Get Them Completed Quicker

Home Improvement Projects – How To Get Them Completed Quicker

by

Kazzra

Few people who have gone through a major home improvement project will explain to you that the overall project went as hoped for, or was finished in timely manner and without any difficulties. The chances and potential for things to go wrong are great, because of the large number of people needed for this sort of activity. Even so, with a bit of advance planning on your own, you can prevent the worst sorts of home improvement experiences.

It is wise to arrange to have an individual be responsible for the total home improvement project. Since the general contractor is aware of everything that will have to be done to finish the project, they are often the best person to put in control. A spending budget cannot be emphasized enough. Following a good expense plan will make your life much easier. You may realize that the installation has become unmanageable, if you begin adding items that weren’t planned for. It can be very easy to find yourself over budget, if you start adding a few additions from time to time. Make certain to ward off this problem from the very beginning. You should negotiate a fixed price contract with the contractor, so that no matter how long the work takes them to finish off, they will be paid a set sum which you have already agreed to. This will make it to their benefit to finish the job speedily, and will also eliminate the danger of you being given an unreasonable bill at the end of the project. It may possibly take just a little time for you to find a contractor who will consent to these terms, nevertheless they can be found. Simply be positive that you are planning on paying a realistic price for the construction to be finished. Be sure to phone around and obtain quite a few estimates before you sign any contract. To refrain from having too many people doing work on the job all at once, keep from hiring too many special contractors for each part of the work that needs to be completed. Get your general contractor to use subcontractors for the specialized parts of the undertaking that need to be accomplished by a person certified in that area. They will generally know people that they hire to do this kind of thing on a regular basis. For instance, do not contract electricians or plumbers on your own. They can occasionally take forever to complete the work that is needed done. Allow the builder to bring in his own favored plumber or electrician as opposed to finding one on your own. They will be aware of the right subcontractors to hire, as they do this regularly in their particular line of work. Try hard to keep from getting involved with the daily work on the project. Also, do not start trying to make modifications in the midst of the work. The more you allow the contractor to do his work, without having interference from you, the easier it will be on you both. Let your contractor cope with the scheduling and installation of the various parts of the project that need doing. Your building contractor will have taken care of this sort of thing many different times previously, and will recognize exactly what needs carried out and the best time to take action. The contractor can make certain that the home improvement project advances as smoothly as possible. You will not look back on your home improvement project with disfavor, when you permit your building contractor to take care of all the specifics, and refrain from going above your budget by adding all kinds of extra miscellaneous paraphernalia.
