8 Job Interview Mistakes To Avoid

1. – DON’T SHOW UP LATE.

There is no easier way to lose points with a prospective employer than to show up late. First impressions do last. And unfortunately,showing up late screams things like I am unreliable or your time isnot important to me. Is this what you want a prospective employer tothink before you even have a chance to utter a word? Make it a pointto try to be early to every interview. That way, bad weather, trafficand that last minute phone call stand less chance of ruining yourentrance. If the unforeseen 18-wheeler does happen to dump 10 tons oftomatoes across the interstate, upon arrival, apologize first thing,offer a quickexplanation and move on. (Ideally you would have calledfrom your cell phone as soon as you caught sight of the delay.)

2. – DON’T ACT DISINTERESTED.

No matter what the circumstance never act disinterested during aninterview. If 10 minutes into the meeting you become certain thatnothing on the planet could convince you to take a job with thecompany continue to pay attention and act like you care about theconversation. Remember that the interviewer does not exist in avacuum. He or she has friends, relatives, and associates who mayinfluence future job opportunities. If you behave poorly, theinterviewer will remember and will share the story of you and yourunprofessional behavior with others. Havent you shared bad jobsearch experiences with people close to you? 3. – DON’T BE UNPREPARED.

Being prepared has many facets. Interviewers expect you to knowsomething about the company and the position you are seeking. Havingthis knowledge makes you appear both motivated and truly interested.So make sure you do your research! Excellent sources of informationinclude, the Internet, periodicals and people already in the field.Another facet of being prepared is being ready for the types ofquestions that may be asked. There are numerous articles on the weband in bookstores with practice interview questions and answers. Makesure to utilize all such resources available to you. And finally,dont forget to have extra copies of your resume and references onhand should they be requested.

4. – DON’T FORGET YOUR MANNERS.

No matter how old fashioned it appears to use word like please,sir, maam and thank you, do not delete these words from yourvocabulary. These simple words can work wonders towards making apositive impression. Always use a respectful tone of voice. Do notunnecessarily interrupt the interviewer. Maintain eye contact and apleasant expression. Leave the slang, slouching and gum chewing athome. Good manners signals respect for yourself and the people aroundyou; never underestimate their importance.

5. – DON’T DRESS INAPPROPRIATELY.

Whether you like it or not, the job interview is not the time toexpress your individuality. Always remember that your goal is to gainemployment, not to make a fashion statement. Accordingly, you shouldnot dress in any way that will distract attention from you and yourqualifications. Things to avoid include unconventional hair colors,excessive jewelry and makeup and any clothes that you would wear to anightclub. Prior to the interview, contact the companies HRdepartment and inquire about the company dress code. Do your best todress accordingly. If there is any doubt, err on the side of beingoverdressed.

6. – DON’T BE UNTRUTHFUL

Never, ever lie during an interview. Mistruths have an uncanny habitof catching up to people. If the interviewer catches you in a lieduring the interview, you have seriously damaged your chances of beinghired. After all, would you hire someone that you couldnt trust? Ifyour employer finds out you lied after you have been hired, it couldbe grounds for dismissal. Even if they do not dismiss you, you arestill in serious trouble as you have damaged your integrity in theeyes of your boss. The bottom line is that you should always betruthful when interviewing.

7. – DON’T BE MODEST.

When searching for the right job, put your modesty aside. Dont beafraid to confidently describe your skills and accomplishments. Afterall, if you dont sing your praises to your potential boss, then whowill? Dont count on your resume to do all the work; it is only atool to help you land the interview. Once you get your foot in thedoor, it is up to you to convince the interviewer that you are theideal person for the job. Worried that you will come across asconceited instead of self-confident? Then practice how and what youwill say with a friend or family member who can provide honestfeedback.

8. – DON’T FORGET THE “THANK YOU NOTE.

Once the interview has concluded, take a few moments to jot down yourimpressions of the interviewer, what you talked about and anyinteresting points that were brought up during the meeting. The idealtime and place to do this is in your car a soon as you have exited thebuilding, as your thoughts will be most fresh at this time. Use thisinformation as you compose a well thought out thank you note to theinterviewer. Mail this note no later than the day following theinterview. Remember promptness signals interest.

Wikinews interviews Joe Schriner, Independent U.S. presidential candidate

Journalist, counselor, painter, and US 2012 Presidential candidate Joe Schriner of Cleveland, Ohio took some time to discuss his campaign with Wikinews in an interview.

Schriner previously ran for president in 2000, 2004, and 2008, but failed to gain much traction in the races. He announced his candidacy for the 2012 race immediately following the 2008 election. Schriner refers to himself as the “Average Joe” candidate, and advocates a pro-life and pro-environmentalist platform. He has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, and has published public policy papers exploring solutions to American issues.

Wikinews interviews specialists on China, Iran, Russia support for al-Assad

Over the past week, diplomatic actions have averted — or, at least delayed — military strikes on Syria by the United States. Wikinews sought input from a range of international experts on the situation; and, the tensions caused by Russia’s support for the al-Assad regime despite its apparent use of chemical weapons.

Tensions in the country increased dramatically, late August when it was reported between 100 and 1,300 people were killed in an alleged chemical attack. Many of those killed appeared to be children, with some of the pictures and video coming out of the country showing — according to witnesses — those who died from apparent suffocation; some foaming at the mouth, others having convulsions.

Amongst Syria’s few remaining allies, Iran, China, and Russia continue to oppose calls for military intervention. In an effort to provide a better-understanding of the reasoning behind their ongoing support, the following people were posed a range of questions.

Five construction workers shot dead in Afghanistan

According to reports from officials, four Pakistani and one Afghan road construction workers were killed in Afghanistan yesterday by armed men.

The interior ministry reported that the attack happened on Thursday morning, in the Panjwayi district in the Kandahar province, and noted that one other Pakistani and Afghan labourer were injured. The workers were reportedly en route to a building site operated by the SAITA construction firm.

“They were going to work when this incident took place. We are arranging transportation of their bodies back to Pakistan,” commented Ajmal Farooqi, an executive with the company.

Police official Agha said that two gunmen motorcycle opened fire on the workers, conflicting with reports from the interior ministry, which says that there were three gunmen.

Agence France-Presse reports that this incident bears the hallmarks of the Taleban; however, Taleban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi remarked that “[o]ur friends did not say anything about it, we don’t have information about the incident”.

The incident happened at the Wendy’s located at 1405 Monterey Highway, San Jose, California.

San Jose, California — A woman eating a bowl of chili at a Wendy’s restaurant bit into a chewy bit that turned out to be a human finger. She immediately spat it out, warned other patrons to stop eating, and upon recognizing the object as a finger, vomited.

“I’m more of a Carl’s Jr. person,” the 39-year-old Las Vegas woman, Anna Ayala, told Knight Ridder. She said this incident was her first visit to a Wendy’s restaurant. Ayala described how she found the finger, “Suddenly something crunchy was in my mouth,” she continued, “and I spit it out.”

According to Devina Cordero, 20, after Ayala found the finger, she ran up to her and Cordero’s boyfriend and said, “Don’t eat it! Look, there’s a human finger in our chili.”

“We went up to the counter and they told us it was a vegetable,” Cordero continued. “The people from Wendy’s were poking it with a spoon.”

The restaurant is located at 1405 Monterey Highway, just south of downtown San Jose.

Chili was still on the menu as the restaurant closed for the evening.

Wikinews reporter David Vasquez drove his car up to the drive-thru menu and found that chili was still on the menu, at a price of US$1.19 for a small serving. He also witnessed workers unloading supplies from a semi-trailer truck in the restaurant’s parking lot, and carting them into the back door of the establishment.

According to Ben Gale, director of environmental health for Santa Clara County, the finger did not come from any of the employees at the restaurant. “We asked everybody to show us they have 10 fingers and everything is OK there,” he said. The found portion of the finger likely belonged to a woman because of its long and manicured fingernail, also found in the food.

Officials seized the food supply at the restaurant and are tracing it back to the manufacturer, where they believe the finger may have gotten mixed in with the raw ingredients used to prepare the chili. The restaurant’s operators were later permitted to re-open after preparing new chili prepared from fresh ingredients.

As this story was filed, there was no mention of the incident on the Wendy’s corporate web site. Wendy’s issued a statement through a spokesman.

“Food safety is of utmost importance to us,” said Wendy’s spokesman Joe Desmond. He referred to the incident as an “unsubstantiated claim.”

“We are cooperating fully with the local police and health departments with their investigation. It’s important not to jump to conclusions. Here at Wendy’s we plan to do right by our customers,” Desmond said.

According to county health officials, the unfortunate woman who bit into the finger is doing fine, despite her initial reaction. Officials also noted that the finger would have been cooked at a high enough temperature to destroy any viruses.

The Santa Clara county medical examiner reported that the finger had a solid fingerprint, although investigators did not say if a search of fingerprint databases would be performed to find the owner of the finger.

Tips About Health Care Services

With the cost of providing a professional medical service to American families rising, it is not surprising that many people are looking for an affordable health care provider. Increasingly, workers are finding themselves on the receiving end from their employers who are reducing the services provided or passing on the increases. It was not that long ago that I had a fantastic health plan but all that has changed. The first we knew about it was when the company called a meeting informing of some changes including the switch to a cheaper health care provider.The excuse was that they were trying to ensure the new package would help everyone in the company. Many people I have spoken to are happy with the new insurance and that I am just as well provided for. I don not mind other workers benefiting but it costs me more now, almost twice as much more to have my family covered in the plan. OK, so many other people benefit, including my company, but my paycheck is considerably lighter now that the premium has doubled to keep my family on the policy.I liked the previous company and so far I am not as impressed with the new one although the health care plan does not seem that bad. The new affordable health care plan initiated by my company meant that certain workers found themselves a lot worse off financially with additional co-pays and expenses. You see, four years ago, I gave birth to a little girl and of course my old insurance paid for the whole of my hospital stay. Compare this to the new health care plan and I would be out of pocket by over 4,000 dollars.You also have to bear in mind that this additional expense is just the hospital bill and does not include the additional work fees I must now pay. The availability of affordable health care plans is on the increase which should help those less fortunate. Those less fortunate can now get free health care more readily and workers without health care are able to join special schemes. In principle, these plans are a good thing but there are always those that misuse it making the situation difficult for genuine cases.For many people desperately trying to improve their situation these affordable health care plans are a life-line but to others they are just an easy option. I get annoyed because it is the upright taxpayer who has to finance these schemes for the needy and not the state. By switching providers, it was my company that realized the true advantages of this low cost option and a number of employees. Having a reduced income seems to be the result of these work changes with only the company truly benefiting. We have a responsibility here in America to providing some sort of affordable health care for those that need it most.

Crossing guard killed by truck in Glasgow, Scotland

An elderly woman who was a crossing guard or a “lollipop lady” has been killed in an accident involving a truck in Glasgow, Scotland. The woman has been identified as 59-year-old Catherine Gibson, who came from the Dennistoun district of Glasgow. At around 0850 GMT on Thursday, Gibson was assisting children in crossing a road as part of her job near St. Anne’s Primary School, located in the east side of the city. Gibson was suddenly struck by a truck and dragged underneath the wheels of the vehicle. The children being assisted witnessed the entire collision.

After the accident occurred, Gibson was transported to a hospital but died shortly afterwards. The truck driver, who is aged 64, was not injured in the crash. The vehicle itself was taken away from the scene of the accident at approximately 1200 GMT on the same day. A person working in a garage near where the accident occurred said: “There were children waiting to cross the road and they were all screaming and crying. They all ran back from where the accident had happened. She was found face down and it looked as though the lorry had driven over her shoulder. She was alive when she was found but died a short time later. It was horrific and the kids will probably need counselling.

“It could have been a case of the driver not being able to see her because the vehicle is quite high as he caught her on the passenger side. It’s not clear whether she gave him enough time to stop or whether the driver has failed to stop. It was snowing as well so that could have been a factor.”

Louise Jarvie is the head teacher of St. Anne’s Primary School. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the family at this very sad time,” she said in reference to the incident. “Support and counselling for pupils and staff will be available to anyone who needs it.”
