How to Get the Best from Outsourcing

who her has used a Franking Machine before? Well i have and let me tell you as soon as I had applied for one of these thigns from the Royal mail the efficiency of my whol business was improved no end. I love the Franking Machine that is sat in my office. It help me organise the letters that need to be sent out with such fluidity and wonder that no letter is ever left straggling behind. If you are a small to medium business who is looking at ways of raising the efficiency of your business, then you should really tryout a Franking Machine comapny as these guys will help you make the best from your post room.


There`s a great little article (`Business Lifeforms`) on the back pages of the UK`s leading management magazine, Management Today each month. It`s a spoof (at least I think it is!) about some fictitious key player in a fictitious organisation. For January, it`s about Ken, who`s a `Facilities Manager`.

Now Ken has seen it all and truly worked his way up from the bottom to the top. Until, that is, a couple of years ago when new MBA-armed suits took over and decide to slash Ken`s department (until now, running very, very smoothly under Ken`s watchful eye) and Ken himself. Of course it all goes pear-shaped and the top dog has to come grovelling back to Ken, offer him loads of money and a big car, basically to ensure that the toilets aren`t `backing up` any more!

This is in direct contrast to Michael Gerber, in his fascinating book The E-Myth Revisited. There he talks about working `on` the business and `in` the business, making it clear thhat if you do too much of the grindstone not-my-expertise stuff yourself, you lose track of what you are really good at, and what you went into business for.

In a past life, I too experienced challenging outsourcing. At one time I had a great little local cleaner who I trusted (he even opened the store up for me - hmmm, that was a long time ago!). He did an excellent job and was on hand for emergencies. Then a new senior director decided to consolidate and outsource, for `economy and consistency`. It was cheap - but the service was awful. Each time I got a new `centrally sourced` cleaning company, they came with great intentions for the first 3 months and then dribbled off (with our money!) until it became unsustainable and another `excellent contractor` came along.

The moment of truth for me, was when the director for one of these contractors, came along for the first time in a brand new £60K Merc (and it`s a few years ago now). Then I knew where my money would be going.

Door Supervisor
Bouncers in the bad old days tended to let their fists do the talking when problems were experienced on the doors of night clubs within the UK. No formal training would be required you just needed to look the part and be able to handle yourself in violent situations. In 2001 changes were made within the security industry and the Security Industry Authority was formed. From then on anyone that wanted to become a Door Supervisorhad to undergo training before they could be awarded with their SIA licence. Without a licence people won`t be given work on the doors of licenced premises. To become a Door Supervisoryou need to take part in a course with training normally lasting 30 hours spread over 4 days. At the end of the training two hours of exams are undertaken with multiple choice question papers. The course syllabus to become a Door Supervisorincludes the role and responsibilities of a door person. They`ll be taught about effective communication skills and how to engage with conflict management. In the bad old days bouncers used to rule the roost but today responsible door supervisors are controlling the doors of night clubs in the UK.
